In Tales of the Abyss, Additional Skills (アディショナルスキル Adishonarusukiru?), shortened to AD Skills (ADスキル AD Sukiru?), are various passive skills which can add to a character's abilities and enhance gameplay. Most of these skills are unlocked through gaining stats with Capacity Cores. The required stat values for a given skill are based on the bonuses that are granted by the equipped C. Cores, which are added a character's base stat values upon each level up.

Backstep

  • Level 2
  • enables the "Backstep" action by pressing the "Guard" button and moving
    the left control stick away from the current target
  • this action allows the character to jump backwards by a short distance
Recover

  • Level 3
  • enables the "Recover" action by pressing the "Guard" button upon being
    knocked away by an enemy
  • this action prevents the effects of being knocked down
Critical Guard

  • Level 4
  • enables the "Critical Guard" action by pressing the "Guard" button and
    moving the left control stick toward the current target
  • this action reduces the damage received from enemy physical attacks
Free Run
フリーラン
  • Level 5
  • enables the "Free Run" action by holding down the "Free Run" button and
    moving the left control stick toward the intended direction of movement
  • this action enables movement through the battlefield without being
    restricted to a linear path
Magic Guard

  • Level 7
  • enables the "Magic Guard" action by holding down the "Guard" button and
    holding down the left control stick in the "DOWN" position
  • this action lessens the damage received from enemy magical attacks
Over Limit

  • enables the "Over Limit" action by pressing the "Over Limit" button when the
    Over Limit gauge is full
  • this action interrupts and knocks away all enemies within range
    • this effect cannot be blocked or prevented in any way
  • the character is then granted the status of "Over Limit" mode, which enables
    temporary invulnerability from being staggered by any attack, excluding an
    enemy's "Over Limit" action

    Over Limit gauge is not full
  • this action recovers the Over Limit gauge by a small percentage

    the final hit of any arcane arte, high fonic arte, or FOF Change, while
    "Over Limit" mode is active

Notes

  1. Note that Luke fon Fabre's first, third, fifth, and seventh normal attacks, while holding down the left control stick in the "DOWN" position, splits the total damage evenly between both strikes, for a damage multiplier of half of the stated amounts for each hit.
