[edit] Arte Description and History
Absolute is an arte that usually forms a jagged block of ice on the spot that the target is occupying, freezing them then smashing the ice block in an explosion, dealing further damage. The actual effectiveness of the arte differs between games.
In Tales of Eternia, Absolute is a Craymel Arte available to Meredy and Keele Zeibel, after fringing the Greater Craymels Celsius (at Level 14) and Volt (at Level 12). It is of the Ice element.
Tales of Symphonia sees this arte used by Genis Sage, where it is learned at Level 44 if Genis is on the Strike side. In addition to these two requirements, Genis must also have the Freeze Lancer and Grave spells at 50 or more uses. Once all of these are fulfilled, Genis will learn Absolute. When Absolute is first casted, a freezing circle will appear below the target and if the target does not move out of the area, they will be frozen solid momentenarily until the ice shatters. Absolute is one of the best spells in the game as it shares a unique trait with Photon - it can stagger any enemy, and at any rate will keep them in place momentarily. Absolute, like Photon, can even stagger fallen enemies, forcing them to rise, meaning this spell can be very useful in combos. The only disadvantage to this spell is that the enemy has to be touching the freezing ground to get hit, meaning airbone enemies are completely immune to this spell, unless knocked to the ground first.
Tales of the Abyss sees Jade Curtiss as the user of Absolute. Absolute is the first of the three "forbidden spells" and is only unlockable through a sidequest. By collecting the three stones needed, Jade will learn this arte. Costing 48 TP, the arte will, after a very small delay, freeze the spot where the target was at the time the casting finished and afterwards drop a lump of ice onto the block, smashing it and dealing further damage. However due to this, it is incredibly easy for enemies to run out of the spell, hence it is unreliable. In addition to this, Absolute is also a high tier Water spell like Blessed Drops, but is both more expensive and weaker overall. This means there is little reason to use Absolute except in very specific circumstances.
The spell is also available in both Tales of Legendia, where it is a Mid tier Eres for Grune and in Tales of Hearts, where it is found as a Combination Arte between Beryl and Kunzite, where Beryl casts Aqua Geyser and Kunzite casts Negative Gate at the same time. While the spell is missing from Tales of Vesperia, a similar looking spell is found in Inverno, which is usable by Raven.
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World sees the return of this spell for Genis, who has it in Chapter 7. It has a maximum of four hits and costs 36 TP to use. If there is an Ice coin on the element grid and a Unison Attack is used, Genis will also contribute this spell to the Unison Attack.
