Arietta the Wild is an antagonist in Tales of the Abyss. She is only one of two of the six God Generals not known to operate under an assumed name (if one does not consider Sync to operate under an assumed name), and perhaps the only one without a past she wishes to conceal.

[edit] Story

Arietta is a shy, timid girl from the Isle of Feres, the sister island of Hod, who was raised by Ligers after losing her parents in the great wave that emerged with the destruction of Hod. Since then, she has learned the language of the ligers and is able to use it to communicate with the monsters and animals that aid her in battle. Arietta was once the Fon Master Guardian to the real Ion, and despises Anise for "taking Ion away" from her, unaware that, in reality, the Ion that accompanies the party is one of many replicas of the original. It is later stated by Largo that this was kept secret from her as it was believed that, if she knew of the original Ion's death, Arietta would commit suicide.

Having nowhere to go following the destruction of her home and her loss of position as Fon Master Guardian, Arietta joined Van's six God-Generals, at which point Van transformed the newly-replicated Isle of Feres into Arietta's secret private boat, which was being used as a secret base to mass-produce enormous amounts of replicas.

She proves to be of much use to Van, summoning Ligers to help with their attack on Jade's vessel, the Tartarus. At first glance she seems extremely innocent, almost like a captive. She is repeadetly ordered around my Legretta, but when Anise rejoins the party we get a new taste of her.

From their first encounter, Arietta has wished to kill Luke and his companions killing the Liger Queen early in the game, to whom Arietta refers as "Mommy" and who is the first boss battle in the course of the game. It is also shown that her hatred of Anise, by whom she is frequently called "Gloomietta", is quite severe, in that she fully blames her for her loss of the position of Fon Master Guardian. Following the replica Ion's death, Arietta blamed Anise and challenged her to a duel to the death, which she lost. Tragically, Arietta died without realizing the Ion she sought after so much was not the one she loved.

[edit] Fighting Style

Arietta fights accompanied by two monsters, usually a liger and hraesvelgr, though is, herself, largely a supportive fonist, casting spells such as Barrier and Sharpness to increase the power of her monster companions, as well as a few healing and recovery spells. She specialises in dark-elemental fonic artes and shares her repertoire of offensive spells, quite ironically, with Anise herself, frequently casting spells such Negative Gate, and Bloody Howling in addition to their shared light-elemental spell, Limited. She appears to carry a doll as a weapon, though it does not appear to serve any real purpose other than as a possible conduit for her fonic artes.

Arietta has two mystic artes. The first is Big Bang. When she uses it, the field disappears and is replaced by a galaxy, whose core explodes with light. This damages every player character on the field, but cannot bring their HP below 1.

Arietta's second mystic arte is Evil Light. Arietta summons a vicious tornado of dark energy which lifts her target into the air, and then she blasts them with a ball of light that she summons with her doll.

[edit] Fonic Artes

In addition to the above-mentioned Light- and Dark-elemental fonic arts, Arietta can also cast fonic artes that have been altered by Field of Fonon effects such as, Maelstrom, Crimson Riot, Spark Wave, Aqua Protection, and Blaze Emitter.

[edit] Trivia

  • Anise is associated with the element of shadow and one of two God-Generals to share the element of the playable character she opposes, the other pairing being that of Tear Grants and Legretta the Quick.
  • Arietta is the only God-General to operate the name she was presumably given at birth, though her surname, if she has any knowledge of what it happens to be, is never revealed.
  • Arietta is the first of the God-Generals to die in the course of the main story, and is fought in the same place as was the Liger Queen. She is also the youngest God-General active during the course of the game.
