Occupation Spirit of Light

Aska (アスカ Asuka?) is the Spirit of Light, one of several spirits who represent Light. Aska has appeared in several games of the series as a character or cameo and can be summoned through the Aska arte. Aska is opposed by Shadow, the Spirit of Darkness, and shares the element of Light with Luna and Rem. In Tales of Rebirth, Aska is replaced by Gilione, the Sacred Beast of Light. In most incarnations, he always appears as some type of bird. In contrast to Luna, who is associated with the moon, he is more associated with the sun.

Tales of Phantasia

Aska Sprite (ToP SFC)
Aska Sprite (ToP PSX)

Aska makes his first appearance in Tales of Phantasia as an optional Light-elemental Spirit. Cress Albane and the rest of the group learned that Aska was captured by the ancient civilization of Thor at 12:56 AM, August 23, Solar Year 2543. According to the supercomputer Cust, located in the ruins of the city of Thor, Aska is the spirit responsible of the primary energy source for ultraviolet light and also susceptible to a certain frequencies radio waves. Apparently, the city of Thor performed some investigations on the Spirit. However, due to the fact that inhabitants of the Spirit World live in a different dimension from those of humans in the Material World, researchers could not make much progress. Due to this, Aska was stored in an ultra-high pressure, deep-freeze chamber. When freed, Aska makes a pact with Claus F. Lester using the "Topaz Ring" out of gratitude, and he can be summoned through the Aska arte.

Tales of Symphonia

Aska appears in Tales of Symphonia as one of the Sylvaranti Summon Spirits. He appears as a two-headed bird and is found wandering the world, summoned by a flute made from the "Linkite" fruit, which is taken from the Linkite Tree. He will not form a pact on his own and must be sent back to the Tower of Mana to Luna. There, he is revealed one of the Summon Spirits of Light. Despite being a Summon Spirit, appearing where the Summon Spirits gather, Aska is unable to be summoned in the game. In battle, Aska fights mainly using physical attacks using his wings, beak, and tail. He has access to one arte, Sunshine Nova, which summons a ball of white light in front of him that explodes, damaging the enemy.

Tales of Xillia 2

Due to the existence of many fractured dimensions in Tales of Xillia 2, Aska appears in two of them and is presented differently in both instances. In one of the fractured dimensions, Aska is captured by Gilland and used as the energy source for the Oscore Plant. Ludger Will Kresnik's group first believes him to the divergence catalyst though that is not the case. After beating him down, the group has a choice to either free him or recapture him. If the group frees him, Aska then tells Ludger, who he recognizes as a scion of Kresnik, that he must hasten his journey to the Land of Canaan, as Origin cannot continue purifying souls for much longer. Gilland interferes and tries to stop Aska's escape, but is killed for his efforts. Aska then disappears, finding himself sympathizing with Chronos's anti-human views. On the other hand, if the group decides to capture him once more, Aska wakes up and demands to know why Ludger is betraying his ancestor's wish for humans and spirits to co-exist. Right before he is resealed, he outright curses humanity.

A different fractured Aska makes an appearance in the Laforte Research Center, where he takes Jude Mathis of the prime dimension as the Jude Mathis of his. This Aska is particularly interested in Jude, and when Jude denies his proposition to tether with him, Aska becomes furious and blames Milla Maxwell for deceiving Jude. He attacks the group but is defeated. When Jude asks him to explain himself, Aska tells the tale about the original Maxwell and the betrayal of a human woman named Milla Kresnik, surprising the group. Professor Haus enters at this point and grabs his research data, at this point revealed to be the divergence catalyst in fear that Jude would take the Howe Prize away from him. When Haus orders Aska to attack Jude and his friends, Aska instead attacks Haus, who drops the data. Ludger then destroys it with his lance, and as the dimension falls apart, Aska tells Jude that he can come tether with him anytime.

  • Aska's ID during the time of the ancient civilization of Thor was RS232-C.
  • Aska's design is likely influenced by the three-legged crow in various East Asian mythologies, as it is a bird heavily associated with the sun.
