Barrier (バリアー Bariaa?) is a traditional spell that increases one ally's defense. It commonly appears as one of the first supportive spells that a character can learn.
Arte Description and History
Usually, when this spell is used, the targeted ally is surrounded by a crystal barrier, and their defense is raised by a moderate amount. In more recent games, this spell raises the physical defense parameter only, leaving magical defense unchanged.
In Tales of Eternia, this arte is Darkness-elemental and can be used by either Meredy or Keele Zeibel, depending on who is using Shadow's Craymel Cage. In Tales of Symphonia, Raine Sage eventually learns either Field Barrier or Permaguard after repeated usage of Barrier, depending on which arte branch she is heading toward. In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, the usage requirement is the same, but all classes with this spell will learn Field Barrier only. The usage requirement was removed in future Radiant Mythology games.
In Tales of the Abyss, it will change to Aqua Protection if used within a fully-charged Water or Dark FOF Circle. In Tales of Vesperia, Estelle can use the altered arte Variable Hex if she uses this spell while having the "Dispersion" skill equipped. In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, the spell is Earth-elemental, thus influencing the Elemental Grid when used. In Tales of Xillia, Barrier is changed for the first time in the series and given the added property of raising magical defense as well as physical defense, eliminating the need for a separate spell to raise the former. In Tales of Zestiria, Barrier heals HP in addition to raising defense due to healing and support artes being merged.
