A Chosen (神子, Miko^?), sometimes referred to as the Chosen of Mana or Chosen of Regeneration, is the name of the savior of the world in Tales of Symphonia. This title is held in high regard in both the worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. The Chosen is rumored to be a child of angels, and it is their responsibility for seeing to the regeneration of the world. Their most common form of identification is the Cruxis Crystal they are born with in their hand.

History

Chosen of Sylvarant

In the story, Sylvarant is the declining world, and is possibly where the Chosen is most important. The Chosen of the declining world, which in the story's case is Colette Brunel, has to travel throughout the world breaking the five seals scattered around it. It seems like being a Chosen comes slightly randomly, as the Chosen is marked with the Cruxis Crystal in the hand when they are born. In Sylvarant, the first Chosen of Regeneration in history is named Spiritua. She left a recording of her journey and the locations of the seals called the Book of Regeneration.

Chosen of Tethe'alla

In the story, Tethe'alla is the flourishing world, a symbol of a previous unknown Chosen's success in the past. Because of his or her success, the only one the Chosen has to obey is the King himself, making him or her the second most powerful person on Tethe'alla. Because of the not existing need for a Chosen, it seems like the title of a Chosen goes to the oldest child, must it be son or daughter. Zelos Wilder tells Lloyd Irving at a point in the story that his father's lover tried to kill him, for if she did, his half-sister would become the Chosen instead, making it likely that the Cruxis Crystal also goes to the oldest child along with the Chosen title. Relatives of the Chosen are forced to live away from each other so that in case some disaster strikes, there will still be someone to take over the title.

Mana Lineage

The Chosen is known to be a member of a mana lineage, and their parents are brought together by the Church of Martel. Zelos is an example on that, in which his father and mother were forced to marry each other even though they loved others. And, although Colette's mother is never shown in the story, it is highly likely that she also is or was in the mana lineage. The Chosens are automatically becoming members of the Church of Martel and taught about the angel language and the church's beliefs. At some point, they also learn about their destiny at the final seal in the Journey of Regeneration.

Sacrifice for Salvation

Most of the common citizens are unaware of the true nature of the status of the Chosen One. Most of them think that he or she is going to go on a journey to awaken the Summon Spirits and become an angel, regenerating the world. However, this is not true. The true purpose of the Chosen is to lose his or her humanity for each seal he or she breaks. Upon willingly breaking the last seal in the Tower of Salvation, they will lose their heart and memory and be taken to Derris-Kharlan to act as Martel's vessel. When the Chosen is taken to Derris-Kharlan, the world he or she represents will be regenerated, sending the other world into decline.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

In the sequel to the story, the Chosen's worth is gradually decreasing, as the need of one no longer exists, and rumors about the Chosens abandoning each of their lands are spread across the world. However, the two last Chosens from each world are known throughout the reunited world, although Colette is the only one called the "Chosen of Regeneration". Currently, the Vanguard are trying to hunt them down for their Cruxis Crystals, though unsuccessful.
