[edit] Creation and Reason
The Eternal Sword is a legendary sword, capable of cleaving the fabric of time and space itself. The Eternal Sword was created by Origin, the King of Summon Spirits, at the request of Mithos Yggdrasill, who held a pact with him at the time. Mithos used the Eternal Sword to split the world in two halves, placing each world in separate dimensions tied to each other in order to stop the development of magitechnology and war, which had killed the first great tree. Mithos, grieved by the death of his older sister, broke his pact with Origin, the sword then laid rested in the seal room at the Tower of Salvation.
[edit] Role in Tales of Symphonia
During their first encounter with Yggdrasil Lloyd Irving and friends were almost victims of being killed with the sword, but were saved by the Renegades. After the events in their final visit to the Tower of Salvation either Kratos or Zelos(depending upon which storyline the player picked) will give Lloyd the Ring of Pact to allow the sword to be wielded by a human. In order to wield the sword Lloyd must defeat Kratos in battle to awaken Origin. After the events at Origin's seal, the summon spirit gives Lloyd the ability to wield the sword. At the Tower of Salvation it is revealed that Lloyd's Material Blade makes the Eternal Sword. At the end of the game Lloyd used the sword to reunite the two worlds, but as seeing the world would die without a mana link, both Lloyd and Colette germinate the Great Seed, forming the Giant Yggdrasill Tree. At the end of Symphonia, Lloyd places the Flamberge right next to Anna's grave at Dirk's House. Vorpal Sword's fate is unknown.
- Lloyd has a hidden "LV.3 Special Attack" (known as Mystic Arte) in Tales of Symphonia called Falcon's Crest. Lloyd creates an emblem-like crest on the ground using the Eternal Sword, dealing damage to all foes in the area.
[edit] Role in Tales of Phantasia
Approximately 4000 years later after the events in Symphonia the Eternal Sword must be found since it is the only known way to open the path to Dhaos' Castle and defeat Dhaos. In order to make the sword the must find the Flamberge and Vorpal Sword, which can be obtained after defeating Flamberge and Fen Beast. After taking the sword to Heimdall and making a pact with Origin, the great summon spirit fuses the two swords into the Eternal Sword and gives it to Cress Albane. After obtaining the Eternal Sword the party opens the way into Dhaos' Castle and go to finally defeat Dhaos.

[edit] Other Appearances
[edit] Tales of Eternia
While the Eternal Sword serves no purpose in the actual story line, Reid Hershel can obtain it by defeating Cress and Arche Klein in the colosseum. This is Reid's strongest weapon based on raw attack power, but its elemental affinity to Time makes it very ineffective against most late-game bosses.
[edit] Tales of Legendia
The Eternal Sword can be created in the customization shop at Werites Beacon, as a weapon available only to Chloe Valens.
[edit] Tales of Innocence
This weapon can be found within randomly instanced treasure chests within Guild District 10 and the Forbidden Guild District, and it is Ruca Milda's strongest weapon based on raw attack power. However, the Swordian Dymlos has much more damage potential due to its attached "Critical Knowledge" skill.
