Mayvin (メーヴィン Meevin?) is a supporting character in Tales of Zestiria. He is an explorer following the Celestial Record who assists the protagonists on certain occasions. He is later revealed to be the Storyteller of Time (語り部 Goribu?, "Narrator"), a title given to those in a single ancestral line as punishment for an unspoken act.

History[]

The original Storyteller took an oath that he and his descendants would record the world's history for generations to come, and if a descendant breaks this oath, they will die. The matter itself is considered taboo to both the Storytellers and the seraphim.

Mayvin first met the Scattered Bones when he aided them while they were being pursued, and even brought them to the Tintagel Ruins to use as a new hideout.

Sorey meets Mayvin following the battle at Glaivend Basin, when Rose brings him to her team's base. Mayvin recognizes Sorey as the new Shepherd, and encourages him to investigate the ruins he discovers during his journey, including the Tintagel Ruins.

He later plays a more vital role at Lohgrin, where he is revealed to be the Storyteller of Time. At the prompting of the seraphim, Mayvin directs Sorey and his allies to collect the remaining iris gems, allowing them to further understand the Lord of Calamity. Upon their return, Mayvin agrees to breaking his oath, knowing the danger that the world is in. He reveals the final iris gem that he had kept in order to shield its contents from humanity, and using his power as a Storyteller, he shows them the Dawn of Chaos.

Mayvin challenges the heroes to a battle, wishing to test their resolve. During its climax, however, he collapses to the ground, and dies soon after as a result of breaking his oath. The party buries him outside of Lohgrin.

Appearance and Personality[]

Mayvin is an old man with short gray hair, a Van Dyke beard, and green eyes. He dons exploration gear suitable for almost any harsh condition, composing of dark-colored pants and boots, a turquoise winter coat, a chest-strap of pockets, dark-colored gloves, a yellow scarf, and a pair of goggles around his neck.

Mayvin is very casual and friendly, gently guiding the heroes when he needs to and teaching Sorey what it means to be an explorer. He once befriended and found honest jobs for ruffians, and is shown to be close to the Scattered Bones who view him as a father figure.[1] Rose notes that Mayvin does not often give direct answers.

He has also spent time educating the clergy at Pendrago on things the church has since forgotten, such as literature, ruins, and legends.

While not often displayed, Mayvin does have a more aggressive side as shown when he urges both Sorey and Rose to follow their convictions to the end, regardless of the sacrifices that they fear to make, and expresses disappointment when they struggle to do so.

As a Storyteller, he has lived a long, lonesome life, which has taught him to cherish both the world and its people. Mayvin expresses the thought that death would release him from his fate and, in his final moments, is both surprised and happy to find himself dying in the presence of others. It is speculated by Zaveid that Mayvin initially approached both Rose and Sorey due to their high resonance in order to collect information as the Storyteller.
