Ray (レイ Rei?) is a recurring Light-elemental spell in the Tales series.
Arte Description and History[]
Ray is a Light-elemental spell that, as its name implies, releases beams of light across the battlefield. The rays of light are usually angled and rain from the sky. In some games, such as Tales of Eternia and Tales of Symphonia, the rays may originate from a glowing ball of light.
In the PS2 remake of Tales of Destiny, the spell acts as a sphere of light in the air that targets the enemy, before firing several streams of light that home in on that position. This animation is reused in the original Tales of Hearts.
In Tales of Symphonia, Raine Sage learns this spell after using Photon more than 50 times on "Technical" mode, its "Strike" counterpart being Holy Lance. When combining this spell with one of Genis Sage's advanced-tier spells in a Unison Attack, they create Prism Stars, one of the strongest Compound Special Attacks in the game. In the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PC ports of the game, Raine is able to create more Compound Special Attacks with Ray: if combined with an offensive Angel Skill, it becomes Gospel; if combined with either Hurricane Thrust or Super Sonic Thrust, it becomes Gungnir; and if combined with either Pyre Seal or Demon Seal, it becomes Purgatory Seal. This spell alongside Holy Lance did not return in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World as they were replaced by Divine Saber.
In Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 and Narikiri Dungeon 3, the Gamble and Bakuchi artes can cast Ray, depending on the roll of a die.
In Tales of Crestoria, Kasque's Ray differs in appearance from the usual depiction of the arte and is a swarm of light orbs in the air around her foes that fire light beams at them while exploding.
