The Savior (救世主 Kyuuseishu?) is the main character in Tales of Link, whose name is chosen by the player. An amnesiac who is suddenly drawn into conflict, he joins up with Sara and Lippy to try and regain his memories while purifying the seeds of ruin. He has the power of stonecanting, which allows him to draw the power from Hero Stones and incarnate heroes to fight for him. In a previous life, he took the name "Allen" (アレン Aren?) while traveling the world, and other media uses that as his default name.

History[]

Awakened without Memories[]

One day, the Savior is suddenly drawn into a fight with Caesar and his ruinators. Sara and Lippy thrust a Hero Stone into his hands, and he uses its power to incarnate heroes to fight. His prowess is enough to defeat the ruinators that are with Caesar, who flees. Sara and Lippy give chase, with the Savior along for the ride. The Savior reveals his amnesia to Sara and Lippy, remembering nothing but his name, while the pair explains why they were searching for him. Lippy is a sprite from the Heavens, tasked by his goddess Leonne with finding the savior who can command the Hero Stones. He came across Sara, an adventurer who saved him from trouble and decided to join him on his quest to purify the seeds of ruin, discovering at the same time that her brother, Caesar, is not how she remembered. The Savior decides to join Sara and Lippy in their quest while they in turn try and help him recover his memories.

The trio follows the readings from Lippy's smartphon, which can detect magical disturbances, in hopes of finding Caesar once more. Each disturbance is a seed of ruin they purify with the help of others. Within Libnas, however, they are mistaken for the kidnappers of Luke fon Fabre and are forced to flee. Asbel Lhant gives them refuge and helps them rescue Luke from Agria, but it is only in time for Nidhogg's plans to spark in Sairan. Multiple seeds of ruin sprout within the city, which Lippy's smartphon was unable to detect due to being magically jammed. The Savior, Sara, and Lippy, with the aid of many locals, are able to defeat the ruinators that spawn and prevent Sairan from becoming blightland. They discover that Caesar is a member of Nidhogg, lead by Lillium and tasked with creating blightland. The trio then continue onward to the next seed of ruin, hoping to find Caesar once more.

Envoy in the Past[]

In a previous life, the Savior is an envoy from the Heavens tasked with sealing the seeds of ruin. Taking the name of Allen while in the human world, he is partnered with another envoy, who takes the name of Zephyr while in the human world, as well as the sprite Lippy. While traveling and defeating ruinators, they save Kana and Sara from trouble and escort them back to Liuse. In Liuse, they learn from Feil that Kana is entrusted by divine revelation to take the power of the Three Goddesses of the Beyond and become the Great Savior who will purify all of the seeds of ruin. Deciding that it is in line with their mission, Allen, Zephyr, and Lippy join Kana in traveling to the various temples and inherit the power of the goddesses, with Sara joining them.

After traveling to various locations, Kana successfully obtains the power of all three goddesses. Back in Liuse, however, they discover that Feil is not who he seems. He is actually a dangerous researcher named Dinan who is wanted for inhumane experiments. Feil experimented on Kana to make her a vessel for the goddesses' power and intends to use her to destroy the world for his own insane ambitions. Though they manage to save Kana from performing the ritual to destroy the world, Feil activates a seed of ruin using the gathered power and creates Nidhogg, who consumes him. During the fight against Nidhogg, Sara takes a fatal blow. Allen and Lippy cast an intricate healing arte that uses parts of their own souls to heal another, while Zephyr distracts Nidhogg and Kana enacts a binding arte using the power of the goddesses. The healing arte is successful, binding the three on the level of their souls, but Nidhogg consumes Kana as the binding arte completes, and Zephyr is also drawn into the seal while Allen shouts Zephyr's true name: Lillium.

Lillium reveals that all of existence is a cycle. After millennia upon millennia, events tend to reoccur, and eventually even lives will take the same shape. In order to escape his prison and save Kana, Lillium formed a pact with Nidhogg to give him the power of the goddesses of the beyond. That power is located within the souls of the Savior, Sara, and Lippy, having been infused in them during their healing arte. Lillium waits for the day when all three are reborn once more and follow the trail of the seeds of ruin to him. Then, he kills them and attempts to steal the power of the goddesses but fails. These events repeat for an unknown amount of time as Lillium attempts to rescue Kana by killing his former partner and companions. Each time, the Savior is reborn in the human world because part of his soul is missing, making him less than an envoy. He does not have amnesia, but, rather, he comes into being fully formed. The cycle continues until the present.

A Break in the Spiral[]

After purifying more seeds of ruin, the Savior awakens within Akashia, the plane between worlds. There, he meets Leonne, who is surprised at his appearance. She confirms for him the existence of archive stones, gigantic hero stones that contain the essences of entire worlds, and tells him that she has been using Liafyse's archive stone to search for the one who unsealed the seeds of ruin. She tells him that doing so requires the power that she is currently using to suppress the seeds of ruin; purifying them would allow Leonne to delve deeper into the archive stone's history. By knowing of the realm's existence, the Savior can also reach Akashia through prayer as well as take along those who he wishes. Continuing their journey and purifying more seeds of ruin, he next enters Akashia with Sara and Lippy. Through the power of the archive stone, they are able to witness through Lillium's eyes how he preyed on Caesar to convert him to their cause, striking his weaknesses while smoothing the way with mind control artes. Leonne's power runs out there, so she tasks them with purifying more seeds to free more of her power.

Within Kaizel, the Savior, Sara, and Lippy are surreptitiously approached by Ludger Will Kresnik with information about the Nidhogg organization. Deciding to trust him, they are brought before Gaius, king of Kaizel, who informs them that Nidhogg's principal members are now converging on Kaizel. He is forming a group to eradicate them and is inviting them to join. Sara and Lippy eventually agree, and while the Savior wants to, a hunch that has bothered him ever since he first entered Akashia throws him into turmoil. At the last moment, the Savior asks for more time. Though slightly contemptuous, Gaius agrees to wait once Ludger argues in their favor. That evening, the Savior explains his feelings to his companions, who are gratified to have the Savior's trust. They decide to further investigate the Savior's hunch, which entails purifying more seeds. With Leonne's power, they are able to delve deeper and deeper into the archive stone to discover more about each of Nidhogg's major players as well as Lillium himself.

Eventually, Ludger approaches the group with the information that Gaius is ready to move. On this last day, they make one final trip into the archive stone. Unfortunately, a dark power interferes with Leonne's arte, and though the group tries their best, they are unable to best the final foe. At the very last moment, a strange power appears to aid Leonne, who successfully banishes the darkness. Once the threat is over with, Leonne is able to delve deeper and discovers that Lillium has managed to transcend the cycle of reincarnation, eventually coming across the first instance, where Zephyr, Allen, and Lippy journeyed with Sara and Kana. Leonne is finally able to explain to the Savior his true past as an envoy of the Heavens and the histories of all three, where their past lives saved the world from the ruinator Nidhogg and their subsequent lives, where they repeatedly fought Lillium and lost. The Savior conjectures that if they had never reached the archive stone, they would have gone directly with Gaius like all the previous times and been killed. With their new knowledge, they can blaze a new path.

Sara interrupts at this point. Though she viewed the past and acknowledges the Savior's desire to save Lillium, she cannot find any emotional connection to him to even try to save him, especially with the Savior's and Lippy's lives on the line. Lippy feels the same way. In search of an answer that would satisfy all of them, the Savior eventually realizes that his hunch had to come from somewhere and wants to view the memories of their past lives, sharing their thoughts and emotions, much like they have been doing with Lillium. Leonne warns them that it will be an arduous undertaking, as they will essentially have to live through the countless deaths they have suffered at Lillium's hands. With resolve, they vow to continue.

In the actual undertaking, the Savior falters. The countless instances of having to face his partner, watching his loved ones be killed by someone he loves, all of it is too much for him. Each new memory is more painful than the last, but right when he is about to give up, he hears Sara's and Lippy's voices. They give him the strength to continue under the belief that nothing is insurmountable together. Hand in hand, they eventually reach the root to find Kana and Zephyr at their hearts. Their loss shadowed them the rest of their lives. But with their knowledge, they can finally hear the origin of the Savior's hunch: Kana's prayer. Her wish for a better future causes Lillium's ritual to fail each time, and eventually her prayer finally reaches the three of them, who can now try and break free from the endless spiral. With new resolve, the Savior, Sara, and Lippy decide to save Zephyr and Kana. Though Leonne forbids them from discussing the cycle of rebirth, they are able to sway Gaius to their side with Ludger's help. Gaius allows them the first strike while his forces secure the perimeter, which will let them do what they need to with Lillium. Thanking the king, the three prepare to end the spiral, once and for all.

Appearance and Personality[]

The Savior is a brown-haired man with blue eyes and dressed in an adventuring uniform in various shades of blue and white. He initially does not speak, though other characters react as if the Savior has spoken at various points. He is brave, friendly, and strong, dedicated to protecting others, especially his friends. He does not show much concern with his lost memories, finding happiness in traveling with others and the new memories it brings. In the fourth chapter after the reveal that he is Allen, the Savior begins to have a more defined personality, even directly speaking at times.

Fighting Style[]

Allen Cut-in (TotR)

In Tales of Link, Allen fights using magic cast from glyphs his conjures in front of himself and utilizes various artes that are exclusive to him, mostly styled with light and ice. Tales of the Rays marks Allen's first playable appearance in Tales series in three-dimensional form, still retaining his combat style and focus on Ice- and Light-themed spells. Unlike his Tales of Link appearance, Allen also has access to Healing Circle and Resist, spells typically associated with female characters.

Trivia[]

  • The name that the player chooses becomes the Savior's heavenly name as well as the primary name he is known by in the present time. After the reveal that he is Allen, the Savior will respond to either in dialogue; Zephyr tends to refer to the Savior as "Allen" if not as "Partner".
