Tempest Strike

Tempest Strike (裂空斬 / 烈空斬, Rekkuuzan^?, "Splitting Air Slash" / "Violent Air Slash"), also localized as Spin Slash and Tempest, is a classic technique in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

Tempest Strike (ToE) — **Tempest Strike** as it appears in *Tales of Eternia*.

When using the arte, the user somersaults into the air while extending their weapon outward, slashing the enemies multiple times while airborne.

At the time of the arte's introduction in the original PSX version of Tales of Destiny, the attack's Japanese name was spelled as "Violent Air Slash" (烈空斬, Rekkuuzan^?). The Japanese spelling for the attack would be changed to "Splitting Air Slash" (裂空斬, Rekkuuzan^?) in Tales of Eternia. While retaining the same name pronunciation, the name replaced the original "Intense" (烈^?) kanji with the "Break" (裂^?) kanji. The spelling from Tales of Eternia would become the standard in most future titles, excluding the remake of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Hearts.

In the PlayStation 2 and subsequent releases of Tales of Symphonia, a Fire-elemental property can be added to Lloyd Irving's attack through the use of the Garnet accessory, the S. Seal: Fire arte, a Fire-elemental weapon, or the Red Quartz item to replace it with the more powerful Fire-based arte Blazing Tempest, if Lloyd has used the arte over 200 times.

Tempest (TotA) — **Tempest** as it appears in *Tales of the Abyss*.

In Tales of the Abyss, Tempest is a base arte in the Sigmund Style. If the party talks to Pere at the garden in Duke Fabre’s mansion after returning to Baticul the first time, Pere will ask Guy if he is becoming a burden in battle and requests him to see Gee at the Desert Oasis near Chesedonia. There, Gee gives Guy a Hod Citizen Registry. Since the artes of the Sigmund style are passed down verbally, and in secret, Guy must find members of the “Artes Council” and fill out the registry. The member who teaches Tempest can be found standing outside of the inn in northern Kaitzur,

In Tales of Hearts, Kunzite incorporates his Soma into this arte, using his arm katars to cover his front side, and his cable katars to cover his back. Chlorseraph uses the same method, with his right arm in front, and his left in the back. Though he only shouts Rekkuuzan in Tales of Hearts R.

In Tales of Graces, Asbel Lhant can use this arte only while he is a child and it is written entirely in hiragana in the Japanese version of the game.

In Tales of the Rays, Lloyd, Guy, and Caius' versions are Wind-elemental, while Ruca's version is Fire-elemental. The latter also alters into Kaenrekkuu when used as the sixth or later action in a chain.
