Spiral Attack (ToE)

Spiral Attack as it appears in Tales of Eternia.

Light Spear (閃空裂破 / 閃空烈破 Senkuuretsuha / Senkuureppa?, "Flashing Sky Fissuring/Violent Tear"), also localized as Spiral Attack, Spiral Destruction, and Tornado Drive, is a classic arte in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

This arte has appeared several times throughout the series, but it has had many variations in effect, appearance, and pronunciation change in the original Japanese reading of the kanji name. Both forms are written the same way in Japanese text.

Spiral Destruction (ToE)

Spiral Destruction as it appears in Tales of Eternia.

In all versions of Tales of Phantasia, Cress Albane's left fist catches fire as he performs an uppercut, creating a flame-colored shockwave. He then spins counterclockwise to thrust forward. The Super Famicom version of the arte is Fire-elemental and the PlayStation version of the game replaces the blast of fire with a blast of light, changing the elemental property of the arte accordingly, but his execution of movement is identical to the other versions. In Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, Cress replaces the straight thrust and the spin with a leaping, upward thrust.

In the original Tales of Destiny, Stahn Aileron's weapon becomes a long spear of light, which he thrusts at the enemy several times, raising his weapon to a higher angle with every strike to push the enemy upward. In the remakes of the game, the arte allows Stahn to spiral upward and around the enemy, followed by a downward strike onto the ground, which causes light to shoot upward at the enemy. However, Stahn also obtains the new arte Senkoureppa, which is identical to his version of Senkuuretsuha from the original game, in which he performs the same rising thrusts to the target with a spear of light.

Light Spear (ToI)

Senkuureppa as it appears in Tales of Innocence.

In Tales of Eternia, Reid Hershel performs a horizontal, counterclockwise spin. He then follows through with a strong downward thrust into the ground at an angle, causing the battlefield to shake upon contact with the ground. This pattern of movement would be followed by Kratos Aurion and Zelos Wilder in Tales of Symphonia, Spada Belforma in the original Tales of Innocence, as well as the Magic Knight and Swordsman classes of the Radiant Mythology series. In Eternia exclusively, Reid's variant has him surrounded by a Divine Aurora, which would be reprised in his usage of it in Tales of the Rays.

On the other hand, during the exhibition battle at the Inferia Coliseum, Cress retains the original motions of his version of the arte, localized as Spiral Destruction to emphasize the difference between the attacks while keeping the name similarity. Additionally, if Reid uses this arte at the precise moment that the Cyclone spell is cast, both artes combine to form Earth Divide, one of four Team Skills that combine artes from two characters into one powerful elemental arte.

In Tales of Symphonia, the arte is executed with the same movements used in Tales of Eternia. Starting from the PlayStation 2 port, a Wind-elemental property can be added to Zelos Wilder's attack through the use of the Opal accessory, the Sylva Seal: Wind arte, a Wind-elemental weapon, or the Green Quartz item, to replace Light Spear with the more powerful Wind-based arte Decisive Slice, if Light Spear has been used over 200 times. This elemental variant can be used only by Zelos, despite the nearly identical moveset he shares with Kratos Aurion.

Light Spear (ToV)

Light Spear used by Zagi in Tales of Vesperia.

In Tales of Vesperia, the arte is simplified to Repede and Zagi, spinning horizontally, counterclockwise, as they leap in the air, surrounded by slashes of their respective color. The Radiant Winged One commands his blades to spiral counterclockwise above his head while the Traitor to Heaven uses the attack pattern seen in other games. In this game, Light Spear's kanji for "Fissure" (?) is replaced with "Intense" (?), without the change in pronunciation.

In Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Xillia 2 Alvin and Ivar reprise the execution in Vesperia. Alvin's variant is exclusively localized as Tornado Drive, and can change it to Cyclone Drive when charged, whereas Ivar can continuously perform it in the air.

In Tales of Innocence R, Spada instead spins counterclockwise as he jumps up and slashes upward with his right sword and thrusts it into the sky as he is surrounded by an aura of green slashes.

In Tales of Zestiria, Sergei Strelka jumps and spins counterclockwise in the air twice before slamming his sword against the ground, igniting a line of flame that then explodes.

In Tales of Arise, Kisara can only perform Light Spear in the air. She spins counterclockwise and strikes with her shield three times. She pronounces it as Senkuuretsuha.
