This article is about the antagonist in the Narikiri Dungeon series of games. For the god in Tales of Innocence, see Gardle.

Thanatos (サナトス Sanatosu?) is the primary antagonist in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2. He also appears as one of the bosses encountered in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3. He is a very powerful and mysterious sorcerer. He has the power to control people by the use of his dark crystals. He can also create a copy of someone completely with the fake having all the skills of the original person. Like other Tales bosses, he possesses a power to be feared. He uses his hair for attacking and he can use an attack called Dark Force in Narikiri Dungeon 2, which is similar in style to Dhaos Laser.

History[]

Tales of The World: Narikiri Dungeon 2[]

Thanatos is the final boss in this game. He first introduces himself to Julio Sven and Caro Orange before they fight the possessed Cress Albane. After this, he continues his attack by controlling Farah Oersted and one of the Legunia's town guard, Mendel. He also controls a zombified Leon from the future to confuse the heroes, but his plans are thwarted when he is defeated by Leon Magnus. He makes his first appearance in the Mirage Palace. There, he is defeated by the heroes but escapes at the last moment. Thanatos attempts to lure the heroes inside of the legendary "Dragon Labyrinth", where he would be able to unleash his true power. In the end, however, he is overwhelmed and ultimately destroyed.

Tales of The World: Narikiri Dungeon 3[]

Thanatos Sprite (TotW-ND3)

Thanatos returns in this game. It is revealed that this Thanatos is the same person who appeared in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2. Here, he utilizes a new mind control magic to take possession of Lloyd Irving and Colette Brunel and makes them fight the heroes. After the heroes defeat Lloyd and Colette, he tells them that they are not the same Julio and Caro who defeated him before in the alternate world. After the player finishes the game, he or she can become him by buying his costume. If the players have luck on their side, they can use the Robber Item arte during the fight and attempt to steal themselves a dragon scale root.

Fighting Style[]

While in battle, he can always be seen flying on the screen freely. He often strikes with Shadow Needle (シャドウニードル?) when the player is too close. As it gives him temporary invincibility and stuns foes, it makes a perfect counter for any physical moves the party may dish out at him. If the player is stunned, he will usually attempt to cast Freeze Lancer. He can also use his hair for his "Dragon Tail" skill, which moves through the ground rather swiftly and can cause a great amount of charring damage. He teleports quite frequently and will occasionally throw in Dark Force after each teleportation when fought during the final battle.

In Narikiri Dungeon 3, due to his low level, he cannot use spells such as Meteor Swarm, Black Hole, or his trademark Dark Force attacks. Shadow Whisper is used less frequently from before, as its recovery time after each use has been doubled. Shadow Needle is changed into his default attack, slowed down as well, and offers less invincibility time. He is substantially easier in Narikiri Dungeon 3.
