Grade is a feature of the Tales series. It is most associated with the Grade Shop, where bonuses that enhance the next playthrough can be bought. Grade is most often awarded for performing well in battle, and can be taken away for performing poorly.

History

Tales of Phantasia

Grade was only included in the PSP Full Voice Edition of Tales of Phantasia. It can be won or lost from battle and spent at the Grade Shop upon starting a New Game Plus.

Tales of Destiny 2

Grade, as well as the Grade Shop, was first introduced in Tales of Destiny 2. On the "easy" difficulty, the player is unable to earn Grade; each successive difficulty presents the opportunity to earn more. The "normal" difficulty has a maximum of four Grade per battle; the next difficulty will increase that amount by two. It is also possible to lose Grade for performing poorly, though only a maximum of two per battle. In boss battles, this changes; the maximum Grade able to be earned is ten times the normal amount.

The following actions will increase Grade earned in order of increasing amounts:

  • Completing a combo
  • Performing Technical Smashes
  • Guarding enemy attacks
  • Using Action Enchants
  • Magic Guarding enemy spells
  • Critical Guarding enemy attacks
  • Dodging all enemy's attacks
  • Knocking down an enemy
  • Knocking down a boss

The following actions will decrease Grade earned in order of increasing amounts:

  • Receive a combo of over 10 hits from the enemy
  • Take damage
  • Attack being guarded
  • Opening the menu a lot
  • Attacking with 50% SP or less
  • Attacking with an element the enemy is resistant to
  • Use an item
  • Ally being afflicted with a status effect
  • Missing attacks
  • Using healing magic
  • Using the same artes repeatedly
  • SP reaches 0
  • Enemy escapes
  • Setting artes
  • End battle with an ally afflicted with a status effect
  • Changing equipment
  • Ally is knocked unconscious
  • End battle with ally unconscious[1]

Tales of Symphonia

In Tales of Symphonia, Grade functions similarly to how it does in Tales of Destiny 2. Grade can be awarded or deducted after battle depending on performance during battle, and there is a Grade Shop available upon beating the game and starting a new game from a cleared save file. In addition, there are special vendors throughout the game that allow the player to buy customization materials and EX Gems using Grade. These venders also allow the player to check how much Grade the player has earned before beating the game. Completing the game provides a bonus of 1,000 Grade.

The following actions will increase Grade earned:

  • Finish the battle in five seconds
  • Perform a Unison Attack
  • Finish the battle in 15 seconds
  • End the battle with Max HP or TP
  • Perform a 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, or 100-Hit Combo
  • Knock down with a combo
  • Guard an enemy attack

The following actions will decrease Grade earned in order of increasing amounts:

  • Take damage
  • Use an item
  • Attacking with an element the enemy is resistant to
  • Receive a combo of over eight hits from the enemy
  • Ally is knocked unconscious
  • End battle with player character unconscious
  • End battle with an ally afflicted with a status effect[2]
