Spike (ToD PSX)

Spike as it appears in Tales of Destiny (PSX).

Grave (グレイブ / グレイヴ Gureibu / Gureivu?, "Glaive"), also localized as Glaive and Spike, is a low- to mid-tier Earth-elemental spell in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

In most games, this spell causes several rock spikes to rise from the ground, causing damage to the enemy.

In Tales of Symphonia, this spell can be chosen over its sister spell, Stalagmite, for Genis Sage, though it is automatically acquired by Kratos Aurion and Zelos Wilder, regardless of what their type is. It should be noted that in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Zelos has the spell Stalagmite instead, replacing Grave entirely.

In several games such as the PlayStation 2 release of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Legendia, this spell only causes a single spike to appear, making it one of the weaker Earth-elemental spells in the former and one of the novice-tier spells instead of its usual, intermediate-tier spell status for the latter.

In Tales of Xillia and its sequel, it is a strike arte in which the user force their weapon or fist into the ground, resulting in a rock spike angled toward the foe bursting from the ground. Ivar can further extend this into Grave Fang. This version of Grave as a strike arte is rendered in Japanese with vu (?) at the end of the word to distinguish it from its spell form that where the last character is bu (?). In Tales of Berseria, Milla uses the magic arte version instead of the strike arte version.

In Tales of Arise, both Edna and Eizen use this arte as a replacement for Rock Lance and Stone Lance respectively, as they share a similar animation.

In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, this is one of the few artes used by the R. Paladin enemy that cannot be learned within the player's Magic Knight class arteset. In Tales of the Rays, Milla Maxwell's version alters into Glaive Agito when used as the sixth or later action in a chain while Ivar's version extends into Glaive Souga when used repeatedly, similarly to its original incarnation.

In the collaboration event with Star Ocean: Anamnesis Arche uses an alternate version called Glaive - Ma (グレイブ・魔?, "Glaive - Magic"), referencing her Magic abilities.
