Guardian Field (守護方陣 Shugohoujin?, "Protection Magic Square"[1]) is a Light-elemental defensive arte mostly associated with the Magic Knight class.
Arte Description and History
When the arte is activated, a field of light is summoned around or near the user, damaging all enemies within and pushing them away. In some games, this arte and its derivatives also have the ability to heal the user and surrounding allies. Guardian Field is slow to execute, making it extremely impractical for combo purposes, but it can be useful to help protect and heal party members.
In the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 ports of Tales of Symphonia, Kratos Aurion obtains the arte if the player follows the game path that leads to his reentry into the party. Because of this, only Kratos can obtain the arte, despite the nearly identical moveset he shares with Zelos Wilder. Furthermore, this arte does not appear in the GameCube version of the game. In Tales of the Abyss, this arte creates a mid-level Light FOF Circle, which can be used strategically to create an FOF Change with other attacks. Additionally, the arte itself can be used within a complete Water or Dark FOF Circle to convert it into Guardian Frost.
In Tales of Vesperia, this attack is an altered arte that Yuri Lowell can obtain. He can activate this arte if the "Bastion" skill is equipped while using Crushing Eagle, until the arte is mastered. After this, Guardian Field is available as a separate arte that does not require the skill to be equipped in order to be used. In the PlayStation 3 port of the game, Guardian Field is key in unlocking the Bushin Soutenha mystic arte.
In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3, Guardian Field is no longer part of the Magic Knight job's moveset, but it exists as part of the Paladin job. In Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2, if Alvin has at least one Charge when he executes Guardian Field, it will become Guardian Grove instead.
