Gungnir (グングニル Gunguniru?) is a Light-elemental thrusting arte in the Tales series. Its name is derived from the legendary spear of the same name, which also appears as a recurring weapon. The recurring weapon is almost always written as Gungnir (グーングニル Guunguniru?) however, with Tales of Vesperia and Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3 as the only outliers.
Arte Description and History
In this arte, the user charges their weapon with divine light, which they then use to pierce through their foes. In Tales of Symphonia, this is a combination arte that combines a sword user's upper-level Sonic Thrust derivative with Raine Sage's upper-level Light-elemental spell.
In Tales of the Abyss, this arte is Gelda Nebilim's version of Anise Tatlin's Gungnir A Go Go, capable of being altered from Surge Breaker in a Light FOF Circle or used as a standalone arcane arte. The difference between the arte and weapon versions of the name is emphasized in this game, as Nebilim's arte uses the Gunguniru (グングニル?) version, while the javelin weapon uses the Guunguniru (グーングニル?) version. In Tales of Zestiria, this arte is a self-buffing arte used by the Odin mutant hellion.
