The Hunter (狩人 Karyuudo?) is a recurring job class in the Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology subseries of escort titles within the Tales series. This job is based on aspects derived from the Archer (アーチャー Aachaa?) costume family of Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 and its sequel, merging it with abilities that are best associated with Nanaly Fletcher and Garr Kelvin.

Job Characteristics[]

Hunters are characterized by their use of a bow and arrow to enable them to attack enemies from a distance. This allows Hunters to deal damage to enemies while assuring their protection from melee attacks, as well as their ease of mobility in dodging enemy ranged attacks and spells. One particularly potent aspect of the job is its easy access to a wide variety of elemental artes, allowing them to exploit enemy weaknesses, a function which is emphasized by their ability to scan enemy statistics to determine what these weaknesses are.

Hunters wear light clothing which usually consists of robes and hats, and they are unable to equip heavy armor. In Radiant Mythology, the Hunter class was originally classified as an elite job, obtainable only by receiving a Hunter's invitation. However, later games in the subseries designated the Hunter as a basic job which is open to all players at the start of the game. Standard artes usually associated with the Hunter job include Thunder Blitz, Eagle Shot, and Wyrm Shot.

Appearances[]

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon[]

The concept of the Hunter can be traced to its origin in Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon, in which the Hunter (ハンター?) set of costumes owes many of its artes to Chester Burklight. These costumes follow a progression of mastery which enables the base Hunter costume to become a Ranger (レンジャー?) and subsequently an Archer (アーチャー?), each with increased arte availability. All three of these costumes can be worn by both Dio and Mel.

However, two more progressions of the costume family are available exclusively to Mel, the Shooter (シューター?) and the Sniper (スナイパー?). These two costumes eliminate the arte selection of the costume family prior to this point, removing their ability to focus on elemental weaknesses that an enemy might have, and also sacrificing their HP and TP growth. In exchange, they gain increased physical attack power and agility, enabling them to deal more non-elemental damage to single targets per turn. The Hunter costume family is involved in the creation of the Thief costume family, as well as the unique Idler (あそびにん 「遊び人」 Asobinin?) and Fisherman (りょうし 「漁師」 Ryoushi?) costumes.

Tales of Phantasia: Narikri Dungeon X[]

Dio's Bow-type costumes, in a first for archery-based costumes, use crossbows instead of standard bows. These costumes work in contrast to the Gunner and its gun-based variants.

The costumes of this family are:

Hunter (ハンター?)
Striker (ストライカー?)
Hawkeye (ホークアイ?)

The Attack Archer (闘弓士 Toukyuushi?) costume also draws influence from the Bow-type costumes.

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2[]

In Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2, the costume family is now designated as the Archer, with its male Earth-elemental variant taking on the Hunter name. Any costume can be converted into one of the same element within the Archer family by using a Long Bow (ロングボウ?) root item. However, any Fire-elemental costume that is combined with this root item will convert it into a non-elemental Archer, due to the lack of a Fire-based Archer costume.

While the normal attacks of each costume is dependent on the costume's element, each of the Archer costumes have access to artes of multiple elemental properties, enabling them to be useful even against enemies that are resistant to the element of that costume. This usually does not occur to the same degree with other costumes, which focus on artes with elemental properties that match that of the costume. The male Archer costume is used to synthesize the costume for Chester Burklight, while the female version is used for Chelsea Torn's costume. The Dark-elemental Sniper costume is used to construct Max's costume.

The variations are:

Non-Elemental: Archer (アーチャー?)
Wind: Shooter (シューター?)
Water: Snow Archer (氷雪射手ひょうせつしゃしゅ Hyousetsu Shashu?)
Earth: Hunter (ハンター?)
Huntress (ハントレス?)
(Male only)
(Female only)
Lightning: Lightning Archer (雷射手いかずちしゃしゅ Ikazuchi Shashu?)
Light: Little Li Guang (小李広しょうりこう Shourikou?)
Artemis (アルテミス?)
(Male only)
(Female only)
Dark: Sniper (スナイパー?)
Elemental: Power Archer (剛弓兵ごうきゅうへい Goukyuuhei?)

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3[]

The process of costume synthesis is greatly streamlined in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, merging all iterations of the Archer costume into a single unit consisting of only two gender variants. The Archer costume can be obtained by merging a Mimic costume with the Hunter Bow (ハンターボウ Hantaabou?) root item. The male Archer costume is used as the basis for Chester Burklight and Max's costumes, while the female version is the base of Chelsea Torn and Nanaly Fletcher's costumes.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology[]

The Hunter is one of the advanced jobs in Radiant Mythology. In order to obtain the job, the Protagonist must complete a cooking request from Nanaly. They must then complete a request from Arche Klein, which involves bringing her Mabo Curry to give to Chester. After completing the quest, Chester will give the Protagonist the Hunter invitation and allow them to change to the Hunter job for 100 Grade Points.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2[]

The Hunter reappears in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, this time as one of the beginning jobs the player can select during the character creation. The job removes all original artes and retains a few classic artes from the previous installment. It also includes artes from other hunters in the series. The job is involved in the requirements to unlock the Pirate job.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3[]

The Hunter reappears as a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3, again as one of the beginning jobs the player can select to be. The job retains all the artes from the previous installment and is involved in the requirements to unlock the Gunman job.
