Wolf's Penitence

Infernal Suffering (真神煉獄刹 / 魔神煉獄殺, Majin Rengokusatsu^?, "True God Purgatory Temple / Demon God Purgatory Kill") is a mystic arte first introduced by Judas and is shared with Leon Magnus.

Arte Description and History

Infernal Suffering began life as a mystic arte extension to Giren Shoureizan in Tales of Destiny 2, notable for requiring the player to be on his third playthrough (second in the PSP port) or later to acquire. This extension activates automatically at a 20% chance to continue from Giren Shoureizan's final downward slash, breaking Judas' mask and revealing a familiar face, accompanied with an unmasked cut-in image. Judas then continues by charging his left sword before slashing up with his right, following by an extremely powerful thrust and a final backstep to his original position. Afterwards, the character sprite for Judas will remain unmasked for the remainder of the battle, and all mystic artes used by Judas in the same battle will feature the same unmasked cut-in, but this will reset after the battle ends. The victory and results screen after the end of battle will sometimes feature new interactions with the unmasked Judas, usually involving him hiding his face with his hand. It is possible to use Majin Rengokusatsu multiple times during battle, causing Judas to break a nonexistent "mask" repeatedly. If the extension is not performed, Giren Shoureizan will end in a failure.

In the PlayStation 2 remake of Tales of Destiny, Leon Magnus learns this as his second-level Blast Caliber. Leon modifies this arte from its somewhat simplistic form into a multi-hit combo that begins with a downward slash, creating a torrent of dark energy that lifts the enemy up. Leon then pushes the enemy higher with several more slashes before cutting diagonally through his foe and towards the ground, landing in time to perform a downward cleave to bring the enemy down, followed by a final and powerful thrust. The rising slash combo and downward thrust might seem to be a combination of an aerial Souryuu Rengazan and Hienrenzan. A significantly slowed version of these same movements is used as Leon's mystic arte in both Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology and its sequel. In Tales of VS. and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3, Majin Rengokusatsu increased its speed, double from its previous versions.

It should be noted that Leon's Majin Rengokusatsu uses a different set of kanji (魔神煉獄殺^?, "Demon God Purgatory Kill"), separating it from the original version that Judas would use two decades later (真神煉獄刹^?, "True God Purgatory Temple"). This could indicate that these two are meant to be separate attacks, providing a direct contrast between what Leon considers to be his own evil and demonic actions, and what Judas attempts to seek redemption for.

In a PSP-only optional battle in the Aquaveil Labyrinth, a shade of Leon can be fought, using the same version of Majin Rengokusatsu that Judas has, in response to any mystic arte from any character being used against him. It is possible to dodge the majority of this reprisal if the the player jumps forward at the right time. This version of Leon draws mostly from the PS2 version of Tales of Destiny, with some changes, and even though his Majin Rengokusatsu is based directly on Judas, the game displays the kanji used in the PS2 version of Tales of Destiny (魔神煉獄殺^?).

The Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3 version of this arte is actually the entire extension, starting from Majin Messatsuen and continuing through Giren Shoureizan and Majin Rengokusatsu. Majin Messatsuen is the only interruptible part of this combo. This desperation attack is available only to Judas; Leon does not have a similar attack in this game.
