Kharlan War
From Aselia, the Tales wiki
The Ancient War is a conflict shrouded in mystery. It is said to have been a confrontation between two powerful countries, but few records remain of either countries. The war is said to have started approximately 5000 years ago and lasted for 1000 years. It was ended by Mithos the Hero in the Holy Ground of Kharlan by making a pact with the Goddess Martel to seal away the Desians, who were the reason the war existed. However, the legends say that by doing this, Mithos the Hero sacrificed himself.
[edit] The truth
Much later in the game, it's revealed that the Ancient Kharlan War was actually a war against the two kingdoms of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. In fact, the Desians did not exist at all at that time. Mithos Yggdrasill, the great hero, is revealed to have been a half-elf, and together with his sister Martel, a fellow half-elf named Yuan and the human Kratos, they managed to stop the war by making pacts with the Summon Spirits. However, right after the war ended, the group was betrayed by an unnamed human, and Martel was killed. This broke Mithos, and he told Origin to make him a sword capable of manipulating creation and time itself; the Eternal Sword. He then used the Eternal Sword to separate the original world into Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. Having broken his vow, Mithos sealed Origin inside of Kratos, and, by doing so, trapping Origin into his pact with Mithos. The pact could only be broken should Kratos die. Mithos then created Cruxis, and organization that would govern the worlds like gods, on Derris-Kharlan to find a way to revive Martel whose soul was affixed to the Great Seed by a Cruxis crystal. Mithos made himself, Kratos, Yuan and Martel (albeit in a figurative sense) the leaders of Crusix known as the Four Seraphim. They used Cruxis Crystals to give them near immortality and for 4,000 years Cruxis used the Journey of Regeneration to assure that neither world could exhaust the mana left by the Great Seed. The Chosen who perform this ritual are near perfect matches to Martel's mana wave-length; they are the result of arranged marriages to produce bodies that MArtel's soul will be most likely to be revived in.
