ToP iOS Maelstrom

Maelstrom as it appears in Tales of Phantasia (iOS).

Maelstrom (メイルストローム / メイルシュトローム Meirusutoroomu / Meirushutoroomu?) is a high-tier spell of the Water or Sea element, depending upon the title in which it appears, that summons a whirlpool to inflict intense damage, often scoring multiple hits.

Arte Description and History

Usually, when the spell is used, a whirlpool appears over a large area of the battlefield, lifting all enemies within range into the air while dealing damage. In recent games, the area of effect has been reduced to differentiate it from the more powerful Water-elemental spell, Tidal Wave.

In Tales of Eternia, the spell does not appear in the arte list. In order to use the spell, the character with the Craymel Cage that holds Undine must increase their Water-elemental resistance through equipments and accessories. If Undine is at or above the required level, the spell Spread will automatically extend itself into Maelstrom upon achieving a vitality rank above the caster's Water-elemental resistance percentage divided by 10. This newly extended spell provides the damage of other advanced-tier spells while requiring a much lower TP cost and reduced incantation time.

In Tales of the Abyss, the spell is activated when using Anise Tatlin's Bloody Howling while standing on a fully-charged Water or Dark FOF Circle. It is also cast by the God-General Arietta, who shares a large number of her spells with Anise. In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, it appears as the "Third Movement" of a Water-elemental monster ally's Unison Attack, attainable by having at least one Water-elemental monster in the active party and a major field element of Water with at least three minor Water element symbols.
