Mao (マオ, Mao^?) is a boy without memory traveling with the imposing Gajuma warrior Eugene Gallardo, who Mao views as a father figure. He uses two tonfas as his weapons. Armed with many offensive elemental techniques, Mao is a balanced character who can attack at long range with spells and fight at close range with his tonfas. Mao uses the Force of Fire.

History

Mao along with Eugene head to the small village of Sulz, where they meet Veigue Lungberg a new force user. Mao offers to help Veigue control his force, but Veigue casts a wall of ice over Mao. Shocked to see that Veigue has control over his force, Eugene orders Mao to fight him. After a small battle, Mao uses his Force of Fire to help Veigue free Claire Bennett from her ice prison. After Mao and Eugene are invited to Claire's house for dinner, but this cut short when Saleh and Tohma of the Four Stars attack the village. After Veigue awakens after being knocked out by Eugene, Mao reveals that six months previous to the game, Eugene was the commander of The Royal Shield and he was one of his his subordinates. Mao also reveal that when his force had awaken it went into a berserk so much, it caused him to lose his memories. Mao and Eugene persuade Veigue to come with them to get stronger and go with them to stop the Four Stars and save Claire.

When the party goes to meet with the Sacred Beast, Fenia, in order to obtain Mao's powers, it is revealed that Mao is not really human. His real name is Orselg, and he was created by the Sacred Beasts to observe how Humas and Gajumas interact with each other. At the time, it left Mao questioning who he really is, and he was they only one who knew at the time. He waited until later in the game to tell the group the truth. In the end, he learns to accept who he is.

Relationships

Veigue Lungberg - Mao treats Veigue kindly, usually trying to get him involved with anything happy and fun happening. Although, he also understands a lot of the pain Veigue went through, and tries to comfort him with it.

Claire Bennett - Mao and Claire have a friendly relationship, usually being nice to her after everything that she has been through, also knowing Veigue would be angry if Mao ever said something mean to her.

Eugene Gallardo - Eugene is similar to a father figure for Mao. They always travel together, and Mao has a very strong bond with him, sometimes crying if something bad is happening to Eugene.

Annie Barrs - Mao and Annie have a friendship similar to Tytree, except a little more serious, not as much joking around, but more as teasing Annie about her diary and other things that she does. They do not start off well though, as Annie had a deep sense of hate toward Eugene, which made Mao angry.

Tytree Crowe - Mao and Tytree are best friends and they usually joke around together. They are usually the only ones who almost never take things seriously unless they have to.

Hilda Rhambling - Mao often seeks Hilda for advice, or to help him question things that he does not know. He, although hard to tell, has a sense of interest in her Tarot Cards, and why they are so important too her. He is also sometimes scolded by her in a sort of friendly way.

Mao appears as a support cameo, and when he is summoned, he uses Force Flame.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2

Mao appears as a playable character. Mao first appears along side Eugene in the game during the ninth story mission when the Protagonist, Annie, and Ruca Milda go into the Garret Woods to find Veigue and the others. Mao and Eugene explain to the party that Veigue went up ahead to save Claire from the Greater Craymel Celsius, and they decide to wait until the party returns. Mao chooses to stay on the Van Eltia with Eugene and becomes a recruit for the player to take on missions. Mao goes on another mission with the Protagonist and Eugene when they go to the Moscopi Desert to install one of the antennas. There, they are ambushed by negative monsters and are forced to fight them. After defeating the monsters, the Protagonist places the antenna and they return to the ship.

Tales of VS.

Mao appears as one of the playable characters. During his story mode, he ventures with Caius Qualls. Mao's story focuses on saving Eugene from Dhaos and Barbatos Goetia.
