Marta Lualdi (マルタ・ルアルディ Maruta Ruarudi?) is a protagonist in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

History[]

Marta is the only child of Brute Lualdi and his wife. During the events of the original game, they are a normal family in Palmacosta. However, all of this changes when giant roots attack the city, killing countless people, including Marta's mother.

After the events of the original game, the Church of Martel from Tethe'alla started harassing Sylvarant. To combat this, Brute formed the Vanguard with others just as angry. However, when the Vanguard's goals quickly turned violent, Marta ran away with Ratatosk's core. Desperate, Marta awakens the core.

Appearance and Personality[]

Marta Status (DotNW)

Status image in Dawn of the New World.

Marta tends to think along a fully defined line of right and wrong. As a bit of a tomboy, Marta is passionate about getting her way. On the left side of her forehead lies Ratatosk's core, in which Ratatosk is imprisoned in a dormant state. Emil Castagnier became her guardian knight, a Knight of Ratatosk, in order to protect her and Ratatosk's core. Marta falls in love with both Emil and "Ratatosk Mode" Emil. As the game progresses, she begins to love Emil for who he actually is, instead of the fantasy she created in his image. Marta also gets very jealous when Emil tries to get along with other girls, stating that she shall not give up on getting Emil's heart. Being the romantic that she is, Marta will fully support anyone's attempts at a relationship as long as it is not directed toward her or Emil.

Marta's family is first described when the trio meets Colette Brunel, the last Chosen of Regeneration and the main heroine from the original game, Tales of Symphonia. According to Marta, her mother was killed during the Giant Kharlan Tree's rampage in the original game. Marta blames Colette, believing Colette ran away from her duty to regenerate the world while being unaware of the events that led to the disaster. Marta claims that if Colette had not been such a coward, her mother would still be alive. Their relationship gets better when Marta discovers the truth about Colette and the rampage of the Giant Kharlan Tree. Later on in the story, Marta's father is revealed to be Brute.

Fighting Style[]

Marta Radiant Roar

Cut-in image for Radiant Roar in Dawn of the New World.

In battle, Marta primarily serves the role of a supportive spell caster with a few Light-elemental offensive spells, somewhat like Raine. Unlike Raine, who specializes in area-based healing to support multiple party members at once, Marta's healing spells are restricted to single targets. Her magical abilities are unexplained due to her apparent lack of elf or half-elf lineage, at least in her immediate family tree. In addition, her First Aid is almost necessary for monster capturing as it is the only elemental arte the party would probably have at the time.

Marta's weapon is the saw-like spinner, a unique weapon that is strapped onto her right wrist. In close combat, Marta proves to be graceful attacker who uses her spinner along with quick kicks, spins, and leaps to attack enemies. The majority of her artes are named after types of birds or dances. The description of a few of Marta's attacks mentions the use of chi to attack. The chi manifests itself within Marta's hands and she then slams it into her target. Similarly, Regal Bryant is to able fire bursts of chi from his palms and is able to use a limited amount of chi healing. Marta's physical attacks are all classified as base artes, requiring the passive skill Ability Plus to link her attacks together into a chain of at most three base artes.

Other Appearances[]

Tales of Crestoria

In Tales of Crestoria, Marta accompanies Emil Castagnier, her childhood friend who has the soul of Ratatosk implanted in him.

Side Story: Cress

Emil and Marta enter Dalchia and offer Cress Albane their services, asking for money or food as payment. With Ratatosk's help, the group continues their investigation in regards to to increased monster activity. They soon come upon a monster holding a doll that the orphans gave Cress' teacher, Mibaru. Realizing that this is the Lord of the Woods, Cress attacks. Subdued, the Heavy Claw suddenly speaks with Mibaru's voice. Mint Adnade arrives just in time to tend to his wounds. From them, Cress and his companions learn the truth. After successfully killing the Lord of the Woods, Mibaru slowly succumbed to his wounds, and was being approached by Cody Hjuger, the recently deceased leader of Dalchia. When Mibaru woke up, he had the body of the Lord of the Woods. It turned out that Cody's orphanage was just a front for a slave trafficking business, and Cody had given both him and the Lord of the Woods to the scientist Malcolm Sloat, who transferred Mibaru's soul into the monster's body. Ratatosk theorizes it was the same guy who created him. Due to his wounds, Mibaru is escorted to Torini Cave were the healers tend to his wounds. Suddenly they hear commotion in the village and humans race there and see that monsters have attacked it in great numbers.

Together, the group fights off the monsters to protect the village. In the chaos, Mibaru appears and help defend the village as well. The villagers, in the fervor and ignorance to the truth, slay Mibaru, who dies happy, seeing that the villagers have finally started to work together. Cress arrives at the scene too late, and Mibaru dies in his arms, now back to his former appearance. The villagers, confused at what happened, blame Mibaru's fate on Cress and are ready to use their vision orbs to pass judgment on him. The others try to intervene until Cress tells them that Mibaru only wanted them to be strong enough to protect themselves, and by spitting on his sacrifice, they are truly beyond redemption. The villagers reluctantly decide to own their sin and decide to protect the village in his honor. Cress, Mint, Emil, and Marta say their final farewells to Mibaru at his grave. Afterward, Cress asks Emil and Marta to join them in their journey, saying that he does not want to see repeat of Master Mibaru to happen again, and together with Mint who also decides to join them, the group sets on a journey.

Trivia[]

Marta Lualdi (ToCE)

Artwork for Tales of Card Evolve.

  • The game's producers were originally planning to name Marta "Selene", as well as give her much darker hair and personality. Selene is the goddess of the moon in Greek mythology; this name serves as the opposite of Emil's early development name "Soleil", which is French for "sun".
  • In the English-language files of Dawn of the New World, there exist dubbed incantations for spells that Marta does not have access to in the final version of the game. These artes are: Ice Needles, Stone Blast, Stalagmite, Icicle Rain, Negative Gate, Ground Dasher, Absolute, Bloody Howling, Scare Shot, Healing Wind, Healing Circle, and Revitalize. This is likely due to the game's engine being a modified one used in Tales of the Abyss.
    • This is also like likely due to her lack of elven lineage, since magic in the game's setting is an ability that is exclusive to those who have elven blood in their veins.
  • Marta wears a key chain that resembles Mieu, a character from Tales of the Abyss. Tokunaga, Anise Tatlin's doll from the same game, is also visible on the back of her pouch.
  • Ironically, despite how Emil is called the "Knight of Ratatosk", it is more appropriate to consider that Marta was the actual "Knight of Ratatosk":
    • She was bestowed a small portion of Ratatosk's powers upon awakening him.
    • By having the fake Ratatosk core embedded within her, she became the focus of attacks from enemies, thus keeping Emil, the true Ratatosk, safe from harm.
    • This is further attributed by how in Tales of the Rays, Marta refers to herself as the "Knight of Ratatosk" when performing Radiant Roar.
  • Marta's outfit appears as a legacy costume for Kohaku Hearts in Tales of Hearts R.
