Arte Description and History

Meteor Storm (ToS)

Meteor Storm as it appears in Tales of Symphonia.

Meteor Storm is generally found to be one of the strongest spells in any game in which it appears. The spell causes meteors to rain down upon the battlefield, causing explosions as they collide with the ground. The arte varies in element; in some versions it is of the Fire element and in others it is elementally neutral. The arte is capable of hitting all enemies on the field, but similar to Judgment, the arte will not hit every location on the field, so it is possible for enemies to completely avoid the meteors. While the positions that the meteors land in appear to be random, there is often a set pattern to them.

Meteor Storm first appears in Tales of Phantasia as one of Arche Klein's most powerful spells. When this spell is cast, five meteors descends toward the selected target inflicting damage to the surrounding enemies. Although Meteor Swarm does not appear it as a usable arte in battle in Tales of Destiny 2, Laville Clemente uses Meteor Swarm when he displays the power of his Swordian to wipe out a portion of the attacking forces at Dycroft.

In Tales of Symphonia, Meteor Storm can be used by Genis Sage. Once a player had viewed the final cutscene in Vinheim, but not actually battled the final boss, the player could return to Heimdall where the storyteller from Latheon Gorge will be waiting in the top right of the village with another elf. Should the player talk to the storyteller, Genis will learn Meteor Storm from a renowned mage named Crowley who also taught the arte to his student Ricardo. In this game, Meteor Storm is elementally neutral and causes up to fourteen large meteors to crash into the battlefield, hurting any enemies caught in the explosion radius. As well as being able to be used by Genis Sage, the optional bosses Maxwell and Abyssion can also use this move, on all difficulties. Sheena Fujibayashi can also use a similar version of this arte by using Summon: Birth, where Maxwell will appear and cause meteors to fall on the battlefield.

In Tales of the Abyss, Meteor Storm is known as one of the forbidden artes and is obtained only through a sidequest. Upon retrieving the Ancient Scroll from the military headquarters in Grand Chokmah and finding three ancient stones, Jade will automatically learn Meteor Storm. The spell cannot be altered through an FOF Change and is tied with Revitalize as the most costly fonic arte in the game, in terms of TP usage. The context contained in the ancient stones in reference to Meteor Storm reads, "Heaven's wrath doth fall upon the land of the children of divinity. Innumerable are the stars that shake the surface of the shallow river. Upon the island of spiritual mystery, bow down before the heaven's power".

Tales of Vesperia also has the spell, and in this game it is not just learned but actually created by Rita Mordio. When visiting mages from Aspio, Rita discovers that they had already begun researching into using the Spirits and, thus, mana as the bases of formulas rather than aer. One mage manages to create a sparkle-like spell, and Rita is quickly drawn into a discussion on the construction of the new formula.

When the other mages state a problem in the formula and ask her opinion, Rita manages to come up with a solution and then casts Meteor Storm for the first time. She then parts with the mages under the unanimous agreement to find a better application for the formula. Meteor Storm is considered to be a non-elemental spell, though the spell is cast with a formula the color of the Fire element, resulting in twelve meteors falling from the sky. The spell had a minor name change in the Japanese version, receiving a vowel extension sound to create Meteosuuoomu (メテオスウォーム?), compared to the original Meteosuoomu (メテオスォーム?). This spelling has sometimes been used since.

Meteor Storm can also be used in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Genis once again obtains this spell in the late chapter of the game. It is now classified as a Fire-elemental spell, capable of affecting the Elemental Grid by adding two minor Fire-elemental symbols for each successful cast.
