Norma Beatty is a playable character from Tales of Legendia.

[edit] Story

Norma is a treasure hunter and practitioner of crystal eres encountered by Senel Coolidge, Chloe Valens and Will Raynard while travelling through the Crystal Forest en route to rescue Shirley Fennes. She practically pestered the Team as they went through the Crystal Forest until they allowed her in ("Join my team and let's be friends, damn it!") but she proves to b useful later on.

Her objective in coming to the Legacy is her search for a treasure known as the Everlight - a miraculous artefact that grants its holder any wish imaginable. While orignally she didn't believe in its existance, she decided to look for it for the sake of fulfilling her missing teacher's dream. It was mainly because of the Everlight that she joined the team, not because she wanted to save the world or Shirley (The only reason she wanted to save Shirley during the first part of the game was because she wanted her brooch, which is believed and implied to actualy have been a piece of the Everlight, but not the actual thing).

At the end of her Character Quest, during the course of which it is also revealed that Norma is well-studied in Relares, Norma finally discovers the Everlight and uses its power to restore the sight of the elderly teacher of her teacher Sven, after which the crystal is shattered. It is also revealed during the course of these events that Norma was terrified of having embarked on her search in vain, and therefore was unwilling to ask Shirley to translate the writings in her stead. During this point of the game, the player gets to see a more serious and depressing side of Norma.

During her Character Quest, a young Norma (Estimated to be around 11 to 12 years old) can be seen during flashbacks of the time that she spent with her teacher Sven. It is shown that it was Sven who discovered Norma's ability as an eren and so enrolled her in an expensive school. Norma appeared to be a bit more serious when she was a kid than she is during the storyline, hinting that her bubbly personality was influenced by her teacher. She also is shown to be bad at breaking traps and ends up getting the people around her hurt (Mostly Moses) whenever she messes up.

It's revealed during the Main Quest that she ran away from home and that her parents (Who she hasn't seen for years) are still alive and living somewhere on the Mainland, but she doesn't want to confront them since she has been gone for so long.

Cheerful and comical, Norma banters with those around her and occasionally pokes fun at herself in order to get a good laugh. She is also the butt of a running joke where she falls asleep at the most bizarre of times. Despite her silly side, she makes deeply profound and insightful remarks. She is possibly the most talkative character and appears in most of the skits that can be activated during gameplay. Norma also wants a "Hot Bod" as shown during a Character Quest interlude and a skit and envies Chloe and Grune for it (Mostly Chloe). Norma also has a bad habit of spying on people whenever something interesting is going on, though she is always caught.

It is interesting to note that throughout the story (Mainly the Main Quest), Norma is greatly aware of Chloe's growing feelings for Senel and constantly tries to assist her in reveaing those feelings or to get Senel's attention, even reminding her that she has to get to Senel before Shirely does. Most of the time her plans fail, though it does work out in the end at some points. She comes to an understanding though after Chloe's Character Quest.

Norma also enjoys giving people nicknames reserved solely for her use, addressing her party members as "Senny" (Senel), "C" (Chloe), "Teach" (Will), "Red" (Moses/"Mozesjiki" in the original Japanse), "Jay Jay" (Jay), "G-Girl" (Grune) and "Shirl"(Shirley/ "Jen-Chan" in the original Japanese). She also gives nicknames to some minor characters- "Fen-Fen" (Fenimore), "Wally" (Walter), "Tulip" (Thyra), and "So-So" (Solon). Norma also refers to the Bantam Bouncers as the "BBs" and Poppo, Quppo, and Pippo as the "Scallops". There was also the nicknames she created for the Quiet Nerifes (Nessie) and the Raging Nerifes (Nelly), but that didn't catch on at all.

She was also given the nicknames "Gnorma" by Shirley (As a reference to Gnome's personality) and "Bubbles" by Moses. Norma also uses the nickname "Fun Bunch" to describe the party.

[edit] Relationships

Senel Coolidge- Senel wasn't too fond of Norma when they first met, and Norma viewed him to be a cold jerk. They become better friends after Senel left the group with Shirley, as it was only Norma who trusted him after he came back looking for help. Norma playfully flirts with him at times, though it is merely because she is a bubbly person as she holds no feelings towards him.

Chloe Valens- Norma and Chloe start of seemingly to be the "Best-Girl-Friends" pair, since they remain to be the only girls in the group until Grune and Shirley join. Norma always helps, or attempts to help, Chloe with her feelings for Senel and constantly gives her advice. Due to Chloe's "Noble Seriousness" she is often embarassed whenever Norma gets her involved in anything that she planned.

Will Raynard]- Norma constantly teases Will for "being an old man" and always seems to point that out whenever she gets the chance (She was even shocked when she found out that he was only 28). Unfortunately for her Norma always seems to get hit on the head by Will (Out of all the characters, she's one of those who gets hit on the head most) because her cracy antics irritates him (Using Grave on a wall in the Crystal Forest, calling him "Old Man" constatnly, etc.) They do show a sort of mutual respect for one another, though, and are on good terms.

Moses Sandor- Norma and Moses make the sort of "Comic duo" of the group, as they are both kind of dimwitted (More Moses than Norma) and enjoy doing wild things, often being the two who get excited over something, though there are times where Norma will insult Moses playfully and visa-verca, though Norma seems to hold the more clever comebacks. The two get along really well, though, despite all the insults that Norma throws at him. Interestingly enough, Moses's galf-friend, Giet, seems to like Norma out of all the characters, and Moses is the only guy who seems to enjoy Norma's antics at some point (Even giving her the nickname "Bubbles") implying that there might be some feelings between the two.

Grune- While not much is shown at first, Norma and Grune have a close "Gal-Pal" relationship. Grune is the only person who would actually agree with Norma's plans and due to Grune's innocent behavior she doesn't seem to mind joining in and doing things with Norma. The two also paired up to make the "Laugh Brigade" when everyone was feeling down during the Quiet Lands part. While their little "Fun" friendship kind of dissapeared after Grune got her memories back, Norma still loved Grune like an Older Sister and was greatly saddened when she had to leave.

Jay- While at first Norma viewed Jay to be an annoying brat, the two got on good terms after Jay joins the team. The two are often the ones who insult Moses and are always ready to dish out some jokes whenever the time comes. Norma views Jay to be the youngest one of the group (When really the title belongs to Shirley) and sees him as sort of a little brother figure.

Shirley Fennes- Norma and Shirley didn't really start off on good terms since the only reason that Norma wanted to save her was for her brooch that later on broke. The two become better friends during the Character Quest, to the point where Norma wanted Shirley to give her a nickname. Shirley seems to find Norma's antics funny, too, and doesn't get annoyed like the others do.

[edit] In Battle

As a crystal eren, Norma is akin to a spellcaster, but has lower Intelligence than either Will or Grune, and begins with a comparatively limited number of spells, and her physical attack, blowing bubbles out of a straw, is weak and unable to be chained into a combo. Norma does, however, learn several powerful and useful spells as she levels up, including Thunder Arrow, the first mid-tier crystal eres learned by any playable character. As the game progresses, Norma becomes a versatile spellcaster able to heal, buff, debuff, attack with all six of the game's elements, and is one of two characters (the other being Shirley Fennes) to learn the game's single non-elemental spell, Tractor Beam.

Norma's personal late-game headgear, the Angel Halo, will greatly augment her low Intelligence.
