Presea Combatir is a character from the video game Tales of Symphonia, released by Namco for the Nintendo GameCube and Sony PlayStation 2 (the PlayStation 2 version was released in Japan only). She is a lumberjack from the small town of Ozette, in Tethe'alla.

[edit] History

Presea's sister Alicia had left to work in Altamira, and their father Sieg had become too ill to continue work as a lumberjack. Presea wished to be strong enough to use her father's axe in his place, so she agreed to take part in an experiment which involved using herself as a host body in creating a Cruxis Crystal. The Exsphere increased her strength, but due to the nature of the experiment, it also halted her physical growth and suppressed her emotions. Under the influence of the Exsphere, Presea grew into a routine and did not notice when her father died. Resultingly, she did not bury him, instead leaving his corpse in his former bed.

[edit] Personality

Presea's true personality is repressed by her special Exsphere until the middle of the game, when Lloyd attaches a Key Crest made by Altessa to it. Even afterwards, her emotional response remains somewhat subdued. Her speech is relatively blunt, and she is unfamiliar with the basic etiquette against such directness and can be socially distant. She tends to follow along with the group, only stopping to truly take in the situation when it is extremely important. Her lack of social graces makes her unable to recognize her own awkwardness until someone points it out. Examples include Presea still speaking "Klonoan" outside Altamira, and imitating the Gnome brothers when Colette remarks that they're cute.

Although Genis likes Presea, Presea never really shows if she has any true interest in Genis beyond friendship. Due to the anti-aging effects of her Exsphere, Genis sees Presea as a girl near his own age, and does not completely comprehend the fact that she is actually sixteen years older than him. In Dawn of the new world however, she seems to have spending enough time with Genis to understand what he says when he is stuttering.

Presea's only emotional constant is her loneliness. She constantly counts herself out and assumes she has no one left to be with. This makes her extremely quiet and very reserved, and thus she usually only speaks when addressed. She dwells on the fact that she has lost sixteen years of her life and is loath to speak of her father or sister around others.

Presea has a violent temper, though she is difficult to offend. When she is angered, her already massive strength becomes lethal. This is shown when she attacks Vharley in Meltokio and either Colette or Regal in Welgaia. She is not only deadly, but nearly impossible to calm once roused.

Though Presea was quite depressed in the first Tales of Symphonia game, she appears to have a dry form of humor in Dawn of the new world. For example, Emil said he didn't saw she was scared, after she told him she was, she replied: 'My heart was going 'Wakawakawaka'.' This conversation is going on only saying that phrase.

Presea also makes goodluck charms, she seems to be a pro in that. For example she introduces the Iron maiden to Marta. After Amil asks what sort of power this 'ironmaiden' has, she replies: 'They say that if you put a hair from someone you love inside here, 765 days later, you'll find happiness together.' After this quote Marta asks her :'Presea, if their someone you have in mind?' Presea replies:'that is a secret.' So it is obvious Presea loves someone currently. And it could be either Genis or someone else, since she does not appear to show her emotion much towards anyone. (It could also be considered as fan-teasing)

[edit] Other

After the party meets Presea in Meltokio, they use her to get themselves into the Tethe'alla Castle. Afterwards, she expresses little more than a desire to return to Ozette. After a run-in with Kate in the Sybak Royal Research Academy basement, it is revealed that the Exsphere slowed Presea's aging process; although she appears to be 12, she is actually 28. After a short while, the party makes Presea a working Key Crest, finally bringing her back to conscious reality. It is at that point that she returns to Ozette and buries her father, swearing vengeance on Vharley and asking to continue with the party.

The villagers in Ozette ostracize Presea for her unusual past and her dangerous connection to the Tethe'allan clergy. Her emotions were suppressed for 16 years, and as such Presea tends to behave like the "emotionless girl" anime archetype or a robot (even analyzing the probability of certain events as a percentage or fractions), especially when the party meets her. She begins to age again once her key crest is attached.

Preasea in Dawn of the New World.

Presea returns in the sequel Dawn of the New World as a playable character. After receiving a keycrest for her Exsphere two years ago, time began to flow for Presea again, and she is now able to smile once more. She is currently working with Regal, similar to how her sister Alicia once did, in hopes of rebuilding her hometown of Ozette. During the past two years she has regained most of her emotions back, and seems to have developed a slight fetish for paw pads. Her weapons in the game are Fransesca and Gaia Cleaver.

Presea first appears in Altamira after she stops Alice from killing the party. After escaping, Sheena gives Presea the task of protecting Emil and Marta until they arrive in Altessa's House. Along the way they are stopped by the Vanguard, and they hide Marta in her Iron Maiden. When the Vanguard try to inspect the case, she replies to them a curse will afflict them that will cause horrible digestive problems and the demon king to pick their noses. Presea only has a small role after Altessa's House and Mizuho, but she later helps the party in the Altamira invasion with Raine and Genis. After the final battle, when the party is bidding farewell to Emil in the Ginnugagap, she says goodbye and places a paw pad for good luck, then leaves. She also reminded Emil that he's not alone (possibly due to the fact her Exsphere has made her live longer and she feels a kind of connection to Emil).

[edit] In battle

Although Presea bears the physical appearance of an adorable pink-haired 12-year-old, and is physically the shortest member of the team, she is an extremely capable warrior. Presea is considered a "tank" character, being able to dish out and take the most damage of all the usable characters, while also being the slowest. However, she is best used as a support rather than a control character, as her low movement and attack speed make her ill-suited for single combat. Presea is the only character besides Lloyd who does not use magic attacks, and is also the only character without the "Spirit" EX Skill.

Presea's strongest axe is the Gaia Cleaver, while her gag weapon, which the player can buy after fully restoring Luin is the Pow HammerDX. Her Devil's Arm is the Diablos.

[edit] Trivia

  • Presea has a knack for carving and whittling, and earns money selling custom figurines, brooches and lucky charms in Meltokio.
  • Genis develops a crush on her at first sight.
  • Presea can gain the title "Dream Traveler", which will change her outfit to that worn by Klonoa, the star of his own game series.
  • Presea's formal costume is in the Gothic Lolita fashion style.
  • In a skit in the game's sequel, Presea says that she created a mask she called "Judas Mask", and describes it like the mask Judas from Tales of Destiny 2 uses. This mask was stolen from her before it could be properly produced, though. The same skit describes an outfit which protects the wearer while showing a lot of skin: the Loni-Kyle, in reference to the characters' rather revealing clothes.
  • When describing the special effect of the iron maiden in the sequel, it can be vaguely interpreted that she loves someone.
  • Presea has shown the ability to understand Genis perfectly when he stutters around her.
  • Presea is referenced in Tales of Vesperia as a skill Karol Capel can learn called "Combatir", which increases his power when wielding an axe.
  • It is stated in Dawn of the New World that she likes paw pads and how they feel when touched. She shares this trait with Regal, as both are, apparently, members of an exclusive paw pad lovers club.
  • Presea is the only character in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World to retain her entire T-side artes from the original game.
