Arte Description and History
During the mystic arte, any opponents immediately surrounding Luke are damaged repeatedly by streams of light that spiral around him. He then creates a ball of energy in his outstretched hands, damaging the foe directly in front of him several times before finally knocking them away. Exclusive to the North American version during second or later playthrough while Ion is in the party, an extension is available that involves Ion casting a Daathic fonic arte, hitting nearby enemies for additional heavy damage.
Luke has two cut-in images for this mystic arte: one for long hair and one for short hair. During a first playthrough, the attack is first available after leaving Yulia City for the first time, and the image with short hair is used for that entire playthrough. If artes are carried over to a new playthrough, Radiant Howl is also made available before the events at Yulia City, and the cut-in image changes to match his existing hairstyle during this time. After departing from Yulia City, the displayed cut-in returns to the short hair version, which remains for the duration of the current playthrough. In the Japanese version, the long hair image is not available, and Radiant Howl is fully disabled until the party leaves Yulia City, even if artes are brought into a new playthrough.
In Tales of the Abyss, during the two battles against Asch, any attempt to use this mystic arte while Asch is on the ground will result in him countering it with his own mystic arte, Rending Saber. This counter can be avoided if Asch is airborne or stunned during Luke's attempt to use Radiant Howl.
