[edit] Character

Though he looks kind of scary and warning at first, he is a very polite gentleman. He shows care to everyone he knows, and as the oldest member in the party (excluding Kratos), he feels responsibility to watch and help them. He seems to have connections to Presea, or at least seems to know her from somewhere. Because of a crime he committed, he uses his shackles as a symbol for that crime, and uses only his feet in fighting.

Regal is a kind and gentle soul, and a very talented cook (unusual, given the only free appendages he has are his feet, which becomes a topic of humor during an optional skit). Despite his kindness, Regal is extremely hard on himself, thinking his crime unworthy of any forgiveness. Regal is very content with being alone, although he does enjoy company and conversation, especially with Lloyd. His emotions are almost always very subdued.

[edit] Story

[edit] The Convict

Battle against Regal

A very serious convict sent by the Pope of Tethe'alla to capture Colette, the party first meets him at the Meltokio sewers after defeating minor convicts. He gets a hold on Zelos and says that if they made a move, he would kill him. Presea comes forth and manages to save Zelos, and when Regal sees Presea, he becomes stunned. Genis uses the chance to attack the man with a Fire Ball. Regal then retreats together with the other people.

The next time Regal shows up is in the Gaoraccia Forest. He assures the party that he is not going to take Colette for the moment; he just wants to talk to Presea. Genis is angry at the statement, but lets Regal do it. When Regal sees Presea’s Exsphere, he gets angry and attempts to take it off, but Presea hits him away. The party takes this as a warning and fights him. Upon his defeat, Regal passes out, but is far from dead. He is carried by Colette to Mizuho. When waking up, he helps the party when Zelos says that since he wants to talk to Presea, he would have to stick with them without doing anything funny. Regal agrees.

[edit] President of Lezerano Company

While traveling, Regal shows to know a lot of things that few people do. This makes Zelos suspect Regal for being much more than just a convict, as he also remember to have met him somewhere before when he was little.

When Regal gets to know that the group knows that Presea’s sister Alicia was killed by the one she served, he requests them to take him to Altamira, a place he has avoided until now. They then see in Altamira that Bryant’s assistant, George, is threaten by the Exsphere Broker, Vharley. Regal saves George by revealing that he is actually the president of Lezerano Company who has been absent for many years, Duke Bryant. When Vharley disappears with the help of Kuchinawa, Regal tells the group his real identity, and Presea then understands that Regal was the one who killed Alicia.

They go up to the terrace where Alicia’s grave lies, and her spirit comes forth once again and expresses her happiness that she could meet her master one last time. She and Regal then tell the others that they were in love, but because of their cast-differences, George split them apart by giving Alicia to Vharley for the Angelus Project. Regal was forced to give Vharley the Toize Valley Mine in order to get Alicia back, but by then, Alicia’s Exsphere had already made her mana to go out of control, thus she had transformed into a monster, killing everybody she saw, Regal included. Begging him to kill her before she killed him, Alicia died by the hands of Regal, much like Kratos and Anna.

After killing Alicia, Regal handed himself over, and was put into jail. However, the Pope promises him that if he can capture Colette and bring her to him, the Pope them will arrest Vharley for him. This is the reason behind his attacks on the group before joining them. Presea says that she can’t forgive him even if Alicia wants it, but she will try not to see him as an enemy.

[edit] Welgaia

When everybody except Lloyd disappears because of the Derris-Emblem, Regal and Presea/Colette are in a cell, waiting rescue. However, the cell door opens, and when they go out, they see the illusion of Alicia there. Confused, the two group-members are about to fight each other, because one thinks that Alicia is a fake while the other thinks otherwise, but Lloyd comes and stops them, injuring himself. After that, Regal then accepts his past and decides to help Lloyd all the way.

[edit] In the end

At the end of the game, Presea and Regal stand before Alicia’s grave, where Presea reveals that she is actually twenty-eight years old (it seems like Regal is the only one who knows this). Regal says that he will go back to be the president of The Lezarano Company and try to stop Exspheres from turning people into monsters like Alicia. Presea says that she will help him, and that Alicia would have wanted it, as well. This may be a sign that she has forgiven him.

Strangely, if the player picked Regal in Flanoir, he will go on the journey with Lloyd instead of staying at the Lezareno Company with Presea.

[edit] Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Regal in Dawn of the New World

Regal returns in the sequel of the game. He is arrested for supposively causing fires in Izoold(he was innocent, but caught helping a citizen escape), but with the help of the new protagonists, Emil Castagnier, Marta Lualdi and Tenebrae, as well as Raine and Genis, he is let out. He then joines the group in the search for Centurion cores, but also to search for Lloyd. It is shown that he took of his shackles just like he promised Alicia after the game. He uses his power as the president of the Lezarano Company to help Lloyd to collect the Exspheres all over the world. When Decus (disguised as Lloyd) attacks Flanoir, Regal wears his convict outfit, saying he will, "take the embarresment for his friend."

While visiting Altamira, his company is overuned by the Vanguard and everyone is taken hostage. While the gang hangs out at the hotel to come up with a plan, Alice states that they had until morning to surrender Marta to them or everyone in the city dies with bombs planted around the city perimeter. Using his influence in all of Tethe'alla, Regal comes up with a plan to save Marta and the city by using a remote control device disguised as hand-cuffs. His plan was for Emil and Sheena to turn him in so that they could get close to Alice and save Marta. His plan worked as they found the detenator around Hawk's neck and used the remote control device to shut off all the power in the Casino area. They escaped their prison and confronted Hawk where Tenebrae swallowed the dentenator. Hawk proceeds to get in their way of escaping, but the group manages to defeat him. Just then, Commander Brute, Marta's dad, confronted them. Knowing that they couldn't defeat him, they escaped from the casino only for Regal to declare that he would hold him off for as long as possible. He then gets captured and isn't seen until Emil and the group confronts Brute one last time. Brute threatens to kill him unless they hand over all the cores they had with them. This plan backfires when Lloyd interferes and saves Regal. The group proceeds to defeat Brute. After that, Regal rejoins the group to chase after and defeat Ricther at the Ginnungagap.

[edit] Regal’s fighting-style

Regal always wears handcuffs to symbolize his crime and his promise that he will never use his hands to kill again. Thus he is forced to fight with his feet. Regal is a fighter, supplementing his melee capabilities with a small amount of chi magic, like Farah from Tales of Eternia. He fights exclusively with his feet, and uses greaves to enhance the power of his kicks. According to him, before he donned his trademark shackles, Regal mainly fought using his hands, and his strength and mastery of this previous style far surpassed those of the Traubel style he uses throughout the game, at one point he shows that that his mastery of his previous combat style was so advanced that when combined with his Exsphere, he can shoot powerful manabeams. He used that technique to free the party while they were being held in Welgaia, as well as inside the Temple of Ice, destoying a rock so he and Emil could rescue Marta, although it isn't known why he didn't use it when Botta and his Renegades were drowning or when he and Presea/Colette were prisoned.

Regal’s Devil's Arm is Apocalypse, but his strongest weapon is Dynast which he will get from his master in the Traubel style at Level 80. His gag weapon the player can buy in the fully restored Luin is Glory Arts.

[edit] Relationship with Other Characters

Lloyd Irving- Lloyd looks up to Regal as a brother and someone that he admires greatly and Regal feels the same way, Regal feels he owes Lloyd a great deal as Lloyd helped him find the will to forgive himself for killing Alicia, Regal has faith that Lloyd hasn't changed and deeply cares and worries for Lloyd, even going so far as to wear his prisoner outfit in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World after witnessing a attack on Flanoir, saying he will bear the shame for his friend.

Genis Sage- Genis and Regal's relationship isn't revealed very much, but they do get along and share a passion and love for cooking.

Raine Sage- Raine doesn't trust Regal at first but eventually befriends him and they often converse over things that the others may or may not understand, Raine gives Regal what appears to be a love letter in ToS: DoaNW, to Genis' horror, but it was really a letter to ask him to observe Emil, however, they are close friends and fans often consider them the parental figures of the group

Colette Brunel- Colette and Regal get along well and Colette thinks Regal is a good guy, but there is not much detail given to their relationship. She is also the one who inspired Regal to make Dwarven Pot Luck Suprise, a recipe of Dirk's.

Sheena Fujibyashi- Sheena and Regal have a strong friendship, sharing the most skits in ToS: DoaNW of the Symphonia cast.

Presea Combatir- Regal and Presea at first have a relationship that is hostile due to Regal having killed Alicia, Presea's sister, eventually their relationship develops to one of some trust as Presea tries to forgive him for killing Alicia at her request, eventually she forgives him and they have a close friendship.

Zelos Wilder- Zelos and Regal have a courteous relationship, holding mutual respect for one another, as they are both aristocrats.

Kratos Aurion- Regal and Kratos' relationship is not specified on, it is assumed they respect one another but unlikely that they are friends. Regal is skeptical when Kratos offers to go to the Iselia Ranch, although their relationship could have improved since then.

Emil Castagnier- Emil sees Regal as a sort of father figure and someone he looks up to whilst Regal respects and admires Emil's way of life and thinking, Emil often asks for advice from Regal.

Marta Lualdi- Marta and Regal have what could be called a uncle-niece relationship, Regal shows compassion and kindness towards Marta when she's upset and offers advice that Marta misinterprets, this is shown in a skit where Marta talks about what boys say about her with Regal saying that she shouldn't concern herself with what they think of her.

Tenebrae- Regal and Tenebrae have a relationship of respect and seem to get along quite well, Regal having a higher education then all of the Symphonia cast, except Zelos and maybe even Raine or Kratos, Regal does sigh in exasperation at Tenebrae's bad puns like everyone else however.
