Ruca is the son of a merchant and lives in Regnam, the Imperial Capital. He is a shy honour student and is always being picked on by his classmates.

He meets a hungry Iria on his way to school. Later he and Iria meet a group of Inousha Hunters who captured a group of inoushas under the Law of the Detainment of Inousha. Ruca learns that even though inoushas look just like normal humans, their shadows are different. One of the soldiers sees Iria and immediatly sees that she's a inousha and chases after her, with Ruca close behind.
