Schwartz is the main antagonist faced in Tales of Legendia and is directly responsible for or indirectly involved in the troubles faced by each character in his or her individual quest.
[edit] Character History
Schwartz is directly or indirectly responsible for several occurrences aboard the Legacy following the main scenario due to the presence of the Black Mist, brought about by her efforts to end the world. She is regarded as a goddess of sorts by the protagonists in that she is the Guide of Nothingness, one of the two incarnations of the playable character Grune, though she is shown to wear a mask through most of the character quests, only revealing her true face once she is finally defeated.
It is interesting to note that she still bears a great deal of resemblance to Grune, even with the mask, and that a player should easily be able to note the connection, especially as the two can easily be seen to share some relation from the past.
Schwartz claims to have appeared to grant the wish of Nerifes, this being that suffering and pain be ended with the world itself, though it is not made clear whether Nerifes actually wished this or if Schwartz were mistaken. It is revealed, however, that Nerifes either never intended this or has had a change of heart and decided that the world should be spared, and thusly does it bestow greater power upon the player's party to aid in defeating Schwartz.
In addition, it is Nerifes, who, in opening the way to the Cradle of Time, in which Schwartz rests in preparation to to play the Melody of the End, allows the party to face Schwartz and to defeat her. After being faced and defeated by the party, Schwartz's mask falls from her face, and she reveals her connection to Grune before fading from existence, at which point the Cradle of Time begins to fade away, though the party is shown to escape.
As the two are differing incarnations of the same entity, Grune is shown to fade away as did Schwartz, into a flourish of white feathers, opposed to the black feathers of which Schwartz was apparently comprised.
[edit] In Battle
When confronted by the player's party, Schwartz casts the crystal eres Demon Lance, Ray, Absolute and Eruption, among others, all of which are available to Grune, indicating that the two possibly share the same list of eres. She is also capable of attacking the party with a large spear, making her competent in melee combat, in contrast to Grune's lack of the same abilities. Schwartz is very active in melee range, capable of performing many complex combos while moving quickly across the battle field, often targetting spellcasters in the party. She is difficult to knock down due to her speed, making her one of the more difficult final bosses in the series.
Schwartz is healed by attacks of the Curse attribute, but heavily damaged by the Sea attribute, making Shirley's Tidal Wave and Grune's Maelstrom and Judgment eres especially useful in this fight.
Prior to this fight, Senel and Chloe are able to obtain weapons that are effective specifically against Schwartz in Battle, the former also able to acquire the Iron Eres "Killing Time" through the combination of his three most powerful Eres, which is designed to be spefically effective against Schwartz. With this eres, a normally difficult fight may be made much easier, as it usually inflicts around thirty- to fourty-thousand points of damage when Senel is near level 80.
[edit] Trivia
Schwartz is a somewhat-common surname resembling the German 'schwarz' meaning 'black'. It is interesting to note that, in contrast 'Grune' is similar to 'grüne', the feminine version of the German word for 'green'.
