Seles is a character in Tales of Symphonia. She is the half-sister of Zelos Wilder and was confined to the Southeast Abbey for life, but is returned home after the events of Tales of Symphonia.

[edit] Story

Seles was born to a half-elf mistress who Zelos' father was with at the time she gave birth to Seles. Despite the fact that they were not truly related, Zelos and Seles still loved and played with each other as if they were brother and sister, as claimed by citizens of Meltokio. After a few years, Zelos' father died and the title of chosen had to be given to one of the children. Seles' mother tried to kill Zelos to make Seles the next Chosen. However, the mother's plan failed and killed Zelos' mother instead. She was executed, and Seles was imprisoned in the Southeast Abbey for life.

According to the Tales of Symphonia manga published by Blade comics in Japan, Zelos gives his Cruxis Crystal to Seles as a symbol of sibling love, as he is now the only family Seles has left after the death of her mother. Seles often acts angry towards Zelos as he had been visiting less and less, partly due to guilt and partly due to his involvement with Cruxis. The understanding they have stems from Zelos' belief that Seles wants nothing more than to be the chosen, when she really only wants to live as a family with Zelos.

A few years later, Lloyd and Zelos go to the Abbey for her Cruxis Crystal. As Zelos arrives he casually says, "Yo, Seles! I need that Cruxis Crystal I left with you. Give it back to me!". Seles acted if she hated Zelos and responded to him, "Now, if your business here is done, I must kindly ask you to leave. Immediately!". When Zelos leaves, she whispers, "Please take care," and tells Lloyd and friends to leave the Abbey at once. This proves that when they meet, Seles and Zelos always pretend to not care for the other, though deep down each is truly concerned with the other's welfare.

Seles reappears at the Meltokio Colliseum as a boss fight. After defeating the tournament three times Seles will arrive with Tokunaga and challenges the winner of the match to a one-on-one match. If she wins, she says "Dear brother have I proved myself now." Alternatively, if the player wins, she hands over Zelos' ultimate sword, the Last Fencer. Afterwards, if Zelos is the one to defeat her, she asks if she can join the party. Zelos refuses, saying "You're important to me. Do you understand?". This particular outcome happens only if the player has chosen to keep Zelos in the party.

According to the manga and what can be inferred from Dawn of the New World, after the end of the game Seles leaves the abbey and moves into Zelos' mansion.

[edit] Alternate Story

If the alternate story occurs with Zelos dying she will challenge the winner of the tournament to a one-on-one match as in the original story. She claims she will be avenging the death of her brother as usual if the player win she will leave and apologize, but she will still hand over Last Fencer.

[edit] Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Seles in Dawn of the New World.

Seles appears in one part of the sequel when she is kidnapped by Alice and Decus to get a Ceturion Core. At Meltokio, Seles is announced to be kidnapped by Lloyd Irving or Sir Bud. Zelos decides to go with Emil and Marta to the Vanguard's base in Cape Fortress. They manage to save Seles by defeating Decus, after his disguise is revealed. After they return to Meltokio, Seles gives Emil and Marta Centurion Glacias core. Apparently, the bond of her brother and herself was revealed sometime in between the two stories, considering they are on neutral grounds and care for each other a lot. Debi Derriberry did not reprise her role as Seles in the sequel.
