Tales of Graces is set to be the 12th "Mothership" title in the Tales series, exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. The first information was revealed in a leaked scan of the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in Japan on April 2, 2009. The character designer for this game is Mutsumi Inomata, despite early rumors that a new artist may be involved in this game. The main character is Asbel Lhant, the "son and successor of a Frontier Lord".[1] This game is confirmed to have a release during Winter 2009. No western release has been announced as of yet, although a trademark has been filed in Europe.[2]
Tales of Graces was codenamed officially as Tales of Ten during development, referring to this as the 10th game produced by Bandai Namco's internal development team, now currently known as the Namco Tales Studio. This excludes the mothership titles Tales of Legendia and Tales of Innocence from the count, since these games were developed externally by Team MelFes and Alfa System, respectively.
At the Tokyo Game Show 2009, several gameplay elements were revealed:
- The enemies have distinct shapes, like in Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the World, not shadowy figures.
- The battles shift from the world/dungeon map to the fight arena almost instantly without resorting to the screen-breaking loading screen.
- The game features a system similar to the Chain Capacity found in Tales of Destiny, and characters use attacks similar to Blast Calibers.
- The skits resemble those seen in Tales of Rebirth, with the 3/4 cut-out. The JPN version has Japanese voices as well, but English voices have yet to be heard.
- The game supports the Wii Classic Controller as well as the Wii-mote/Nunchuk combo. Whether or not the game uses the pointer like Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the World is yet to be seen.
