Just a second[]

This was bothering me for a while but, when the game explains the events of the Float war, Fonic War and many other events in the past? I know they are briefly explained in the libraries of Baticul, Daat and the hidden book in Yulia City, but these explanation seems to me a little awkward for me. Can anyone explain me briefly in the game when those actions are explained? Because cause I don't recall those events in the game. Juan Ma 23:29, May 24, 2011 (UTC)

These events and others in the broader Abyss timeline are described in the official side materials that were published with permission from Namdai JP, specifically the two-volume novel Shiro no Ashita by Sara Yajima, the drama CDs, Tales of Fandom vol. 2, and the Tales of the Abyss Perfect Guide. Most of the info pertaining to Yulia during the Dawn Age comes from the Perfect Guide. Ms. Yajima wrote mostly about the more immediate backstory about Tear and Van in their youth at Hod, Guy and Josette Cecil[le]'s relationship as direct cousins and her role in the military to clear the Cecil family name from treason during the Hod War before the start of the game, specifics about Jade's childhood with Saphir/Nephry/Peony/Nebilim, etc. Translated excerpts from each of these sources are in the links provided at the bottom of the article in the "References" section. I recommend at least reading the timeline in the second LiveJournal link for the rough basics.
So no, none of this info was in the game. This is all extended information that fleshes out each character's story outside of the game, and it is all considered to be canon. Abyss and Phantasia (even before Symphonia came along) are the only two games with such a rich timeline and history that they simply couldn't be added to the game itself, and the other games don't even come close to these two. Phantasia has an even larger mass of extended canon materials, but that's a different topic altogether.

Really? Well thanks you for theresponse. I have only played the game, so I didn't imagine the existence of Shiro no Ashita or any other source that talks about Tales of the Abyss. Maybe in the future I'll read those materials if I got the chance to obtain it. Bye Juan Ma 01:25, May 25, 2011 (UTC)

Is there anywhere to read these sources in English? I never knew so much information about the story, but now I'm interested and would like to find a translation. Moviebaby 07:04, February 27, 2012 (UTC)

The only real English translations that exist for anything are by fans, and so there is not a lot of it that exists. I do have these sources listed in the "References" section of this very article, but for the sake of convenience, I'll post them here. This is a forum thread by one frequent user, Yume Hanabi, the official Tales forums, which has a lot of line-by-line translations from Shiro no Ashita. Then this has a lot of Abyss info in general - just browse the links on the side for some extra things, but most of the interesting info is in the timeline already. Yume made her own version of the same timeline on her LiveJournal here, which continues the listed events through to the game itself, including birthdays and such.
