[edit] Character

Tenebrae is a Centurion spirit of Ratatosk that is highly attuned to the forces of darkness. Although Tenebrae came from another world, he has since lost much of his power. He acts as a mentor for Emil throughout the game in order to awaken Ratatosk. He is also very loyal to Marta, who carries the Ratatosk Core on her forehead. He is a Witty Character and adds a lot of comedy and information to the game. In an optional cut-scene(skit), Presea notices Tenebrae does not have any paw pads and mistakes him for a dog. However, Tenebrae is also very conservative, as he dislikes being called "Tenebie", gets angry if "Ratatosk" is misnamed and shows a bit of disgust by the nicknames humans give to monsters. For example, a Nazdrovie should not be called a light-frog. In numerous skits, many of the characters describes him as spiteful. He is the Centurion of Darkness and his resting place lies deep in the Temple of Darkness. In one skit, Emil calls Tenebrae a "Darkness Maniac".

[edit] Story

[edit] Before Dawn of the New World

When Richter and Aster journey to the Ginnungagap to warn Ratatosk of the world's mana crisis, Ratatosk is reduced to his core form after a battle with Richter. Before Richter and Aqua could destroy the core Tenebrae grabs the core and fled the Ginnungagap with it to prevent Ratatosk's death.

Interestingly, Tenebrae does not pursue Ratatosk's order to eradicate all of the humans and half-elves.

[edit] Waking the Centurions

Ratatosk's core is placed on Marta's forehead during the Blood Purge in Palmacosta, and Tenebrae accompanies her in order to protect it from harm. Six months after this the two ended up in Luin, and Tenebrae calls out to Emil during their stay. The two agreed to make a pact to turn the boy into a Knight of Ratatosk, granting him tremendous power over time.

Tenebrae quickly makes it clear that they need to hatch all of the dormant Centurion Cores, and serves as a guide while they cross Sylvarant and Tethe'alla, relaying helpful information and being a large comic relief at times. Whenever Emil and Marta split up he stays with Emil while saying that he can track Marta so Emil is the bigger worry.

In Meltokio, Tenebrae sacrifices himself by holding a soon to explode monster in the sky and out of the range of anyone. Due to this injury he returns to his core form and goes to the Temple of Darkness. Emil and Marta awaken him afterward, but strangely the core did not open like the other Centurions. Marta alone could not wake up Tenebrae, and he only awoke when Emil contributed.

[edit] Ratatosk Awakens

After a third battle with Richter in Altamira, it is revealed that Emil is actually Ratatosk. Tenebrae explains that the core on Marta's forehead is a fake core planted to draw others away from the real Ratatosk. Tenebrae very bluntly explains this to Emil, angering Marta. Tenebrae guides Emil to the Ginnungagap where Richter is.

Bad Ending: Emil, believing Marta to be dead, kills himself and Tenebrae prevents Raine and the others from healing his wounds.

Normal Ending: Tenebrae watches Emil's acting and then explains his actions to Marta and Lloyd. When Ratatosk explains his plan to use the world's mana to keep the gate closed Tenebrae, as one of Ratatosk's Centurions, stays in the Ginnungagap.

Good Ending: After the door to the Ginnungagap closes Richter, Tenebrae, and Aqua all convince Ratatosk to split himself into a core form and a human form to let Emil live the human life he wanted to.

[edit] Trivia

  • Because of Colette in Asgard, all of the returning characters call Tenebrae as "Tenebie" upon introduction, much to his disliking
  • Tenebrae is the Latin word for shadows. It is a Christian religious service.
  • It is revealed through a skit that Tenebrae had met Mithos Yggdrasill, Martel, Yuan, and Kratos during their journey at the time of the Kharlan War.
