The Thief (盗賊 Touzoku?) is a recurring job class in the Tales series.

Job Characteristics[]

The Thief's weapons of choice are daggers and short swords. In certain games, Thieves are usually related to the Ninja or Pirate jobs. The most recognized attribute of the Thief is the ability to steal items and Gald from their opponents. A majority of their attacks involve them jumping into the air and throwing bombs, which makes them excel at avoiding enemies. The armor types the job can usually equip are light armor, robes, and dresses. The job has moderate physical stats with low defense and magic stats, but they compensate those shortcomings through their high speed.

Their battle style evolves greatly throughout the series: in the original Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon, they had little use in battle and focused on evading fights altogether. In latter Narikiri Dungeon games, they retained most use outside of battle but gained spells to pair with their stealing prowess. In the Radiant Mythology games, their entire moveset is reworked into a new fighting style with mostly unique artes that feature aspects of Kyle Dunamis and Rutee Katrea's abilities, mixed with Philia Felice's bombs. This later serves as the basis for Ange Serena's fighting style. Standard artes usually associated with the Thief job include Thievery, Search Gald, and Bomb Throw.

Appearances[]

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon[]

In the original Narikiri Dungeon, the Thief is a branch of costumes. The defining characteristic of this set of costumes is the ability to hide from enemies outside of battle, drastically reducing the rate of enemy encounters for a set number of paces. However, they are not effective at combat in battle, generally having to resort to basic attacks to deal any damage at all. The Burglar job is the only costume in the branch that has access to a stealing type ability, which is required to steal certain costume bases from various enemies and open other costume paths. The last costumes of this branch are the two Ninja costumes, and while they have a significant change in their fighting style, they are still part of the Thief progression.

The costumes of the Thief family are:

  • Thief (とうぞく 「盗賊」 Touzoku?)
  • Burglar (おおどろぼう 「大泥棒」 Oodorobou?)
  • Assassin (アサシン?)
  • Ninja (にんじゃ 「忍者」?)
  • Ninja Lord (にんじゃがしら 「忍者頭」 Ninja Gashira?)

The Thief, Burglar, and Ninja costumes are available to both Dio and Mel, but the Assassin and Ninja Lord costumes are used exclusively by Dio.

Tales of Phantasia: Narikri Dungeon X[]

Dio has a series of Thief-type costumes, specializing in unusual attacks and debuffs, that act in complement and contrast to his Ninja costumes. The costumes of this family are:

  • Thief (シーフ?)
  • Trickster (トリックスター?)
  • Masquerade (マスカレイド?)

The Assassin (アサシン?) costume is also thematically similar.

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2[]

The Thief is a series of costumes for Julio Sven and Caro Orange in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2. A costume of any element can be merged with a Lockpick Set (カギあけセット Kagiake Set?) root item to obtain a Thief costume of the same element. All Thief costumes have the unique passive skills Kagiake (かぎあけ?, "Lockpicking"), which will allow the player to pick locks on the map and Wana Kaihi (ワナかいひ 「ワナ回避」?, "Trap Evasion"), which allows the player to evade traps on the map. This game marks the separation of the Thief and Ninja archetypes into separate groups of costumes.

The costumes of this family are:

Non-Elemental: Thief (盗賊とうぞく Touzoku?)
Wind: Spy (スパイ?)
Water: Pirate (海賊かいぞく Kaizoku?)
Earth: Bandit (山賊さんぞく Sanzoku?)
Lightning: Phantom Thief (怪盗かいとう Kaitou?)
Dark: Assassin (アサシン?)
Elemental: Treasure Hunter (トレジャーハンター?)

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3[]

In Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, the costume system of the previous game was streamlined and simplified, leaving only the Thief costume. This costume retains its passive abilities from the previous game, allowing characters to pick locks and disable traps.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology[]

The Thief appears as a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. The job is one of the basic jobs that the character can start out with at the beginning of the game.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2[]

The Thief reappears a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 and retains the artes from the previous game. The job is involved in the requirements to unlock the Pirate job.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3[]

The Thief reappears a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3 and still retains the artes from the previous two games. The job is involved in the requirements to unlock the Ninja and Pirate jobs.
