Make full news page for this wiki?--Zolo 02:46, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Oh wow, the irony! xD Edit

I had just started my own fixes for the Abyss arte lists literally yesterday (after a bit of a break from contributing here due to college work and the like), and I find that you just started to do the same. Nice timing, heh... but I laughed (and cried!) when I saw your new edits. Don't worry though, I'll build off of what you have now. =P

We have most of the same info, but I found some damage output info (total damage percentage only) so I'll add that in. As for the FSC chamber data, at one point I considered formatting everything exactly the same way you have it now (xD!), but I think it makes the list too bulky, and many of the FSC effects are identical for most artes, besides those that steal or heal, or other exclusive effects like First Aid's capability to cure poison. It doesn't make the specific arte effects clearly visible (for things like Steel or Guardian) since everything is clustered together like this. So I think it's easier to display only the unique effects, and to describe the FSC chamber system in a separate article listing all posibilities. Also, I would prefer to have a "knockdown enabled" column, rather than stating that an attack's effects involve knocking down the enemy, just for organization.

I also have some changes in mind for the Symphonia lists, which I never got around to critiquing since it's not a major issue. Mostly things like listing T-type and S-type attack info as a separate column, and removing the "activation method" column since I think it's a little extraneous - however, this might be open for discussion. But overall you have done well with your edits, and I look forward to seeing more from you.

I'll make my changes to Luke and Asch's pages, so we can see how well it works and make more changes if needed. I should get to work on the Rebirth pages the next time I have free time, I just need to figure out how I want to display things that are exclusive to this game.

Re: ^^;Edit

A vertical list of all combinations seems to be the only decent way to display the unison attacks. Just keep in mind that T-type or S-type attacks have to match up with each other, so it wouldn't be as lengthy as you might have imagined if you were combining everything across T/S bounds. And I think a single column is enough to display both required attacks, so all of the attack names stay together correctly. For instance, Lightning Tiger Blade (Lloyd + Genis/Kratos/Zelos) would be listed like this within the final column:

This should be the most possible combinations for any given unison attack, iirc. Few of them require this many lines anyway, so the full table length should be acceptable; it's like adding event data in the "requirements" field within the normal arte categories. And listing each combination individually will help reduce future confusion about what attacks match together.

Mayu Miyuki 22:36, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

For the artes that do not fall under either "T" or "S" categories, they should be listed as not-applicable with "-". "S" actually stands for "strike", but the column header can be listed as "Attack Type". And personally, I would prefer to insert the column between "Max Hits" and "TP Cost", since everything to the right of "TP Cost" is requirements, and everything to the left is properties (element/damage/etc.), the same pattern I try to follow for every game. That's just me being nitpicky though.
As for the unison attacks, the damage listings look like they are total percentages of the normal attack damage, so they should be listed as "Total Damage (%)". I don't think Stardust Rain ever did 1000 damage per hit normally, for well over 100 hits on large enemies, that would be amazingly unbalanced. =P
Shinkuu Senretsuha (Sword Rain: Tempest) and all other PS2-exclusive artes should be listed by their Japanese names, since the PS2 version was never localized. This is to fit with Kaenrekkuu, which has not received a localized name yet (it should when DotNW is released this winter though, since Lloyd has it in that game). The current localized name should be set below the kanji in parentheses, the same way all of the renamed attacks from Eternia are listed. The same should apply to Cross Thrust (Impact Cross, used by Gauche and Droite in Vesperia), Tempest (Tempest Strike, from RadiMai), and Double/Fierce Demon Fang (Twin Demon Fang, and Fierced Demon Fang, both used by Kratos in the cameo colosseum). Seriously wtf Namco...
Besides all of this, I think it looks much better now. I don't see anything important that needs to be fixed after this.
Oh, and are you going to continue with the Abyss pages, or should I go ahead with my own fixes?
Mayu Miyuki 00:59, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, Ground Breaker and Hail should be listed like that. I'll add them in, since I must have forgotten about them at the time. I did remember Woodrow/Garr had "Gale" (now Gale Shot) and "Decisive Slice" (now Severing Wind) at least. And Farah has Sync's attack names listed already.

Addressing peopleEdit

Just to clarify, this isn't directed at anyone in particular but, I have to admit, is meant for some people more than others.

All right, this has been rankling at my conscience for a while, but is there some way we can possibly be, well, nicer to the people who come here and edit? I mean, perhaps it would foster a better sense of community, or at least build one up, if we don't react to possibly misinformed edits with hostility. I mean, yeah, we have our vandals, but that doesn't change the fact that there might some people who really don't know and think they're adding information the wiki either doesn't have or has wrong. Can we at least try to address these people with some little bit of respect?

Maybe I'm being a bit crass right now. Maybe I'm not seeing something. It might be 'cause I missed the time when vandals ran amok. I don't know if I even have the right credentials to say this. But if we actually want people to stop by, we need to start acting like a wiki should be—welcoming new members, talking peacefully over changes... Basically, we can't act like elitist jackasses. Do you think you all can try to keep this in mind? Lanate (talk) 18:56, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Okay.--Emil Castagnier 19:59, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Am I a bad person? Wait... of course I am, that should go without saying, with the kind of things that I write. But I realize I keep acting like an elitist jackass a good majority of the time here, which reminds me why I don't ever ask for administrative rights on this site. But with what I do, I -feel- like an admin, and in the absence of an actual active admin, I feel like -the- admin, which serves only to bolster my ego.
I know I should lay off on the proverbial drugs, but they feel so good! In all kinds of ways. ;_;
Byakuren Hijiri (talk) 01:05, January 6, 2010 (UTC)
Er, wow I was kinda crass there wasn't I? I don't have any online presence, so I haven't dealt with people with strong thoughts and a forceful personality in a while, and I overcompensated in the other direction... I just think we need to remember to assume good faith, that's all.
And to be honest, I think we need a more active admin because Category:Pages proposed for deletion is getting rather full~ Lanate (talk) 04:10, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Vesperia WeaponsEdit

If you'll look at how I formatted the "Charms" section of ToS - Accessories, I decided to list the "method of acquisition" so that things like shop or treasure locations are listed in-line with each other. This same format would help to decrease the vertical width for each weapon on the Vesperia weapon pages, though I'm not entirely sure if the synthesis requirements should also be listed the same way or in bulleted form like it already is. And I'm not saying to change it right away, it's just worth pointing out so the existing pages can eventually follow the same layout, or if my format choice is flawed - it does have the potential to stretch the page more horizontally now, especially important for the pages with lots of colums for attack/defense values and whatnot.

Mayu Miyuki 16:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

I saw the edit you made. If space permits, the "synthesis" stuff should just be dumped onto a separate column. At the very least, it compresses things a lot more and removes a lot of whitespace, when you compare the edited section to the others on the same page. But yeah, like that.
We would be hard-pressed for horizontal space if we add the purchase/resale columns to your weapon pages though...
Mayu Miyuki 21:05, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
For the accessories page, the "strong/weak attributes" columns should be removed - resistance or weaknesses to given elements are part of the item's effects and should be displayed within the nested row. Besides, there are only two items on that entire page that force elemental weaknesses on the char anyway. The purchase/resale columns should be positioned next to the acquisition column, so that more relevant info can be placed closer to the left of the table.
As for the axes page... yeah. The skills should still have a separate column. Perhaps we should nest the acquisition stuff into a new line, since that's the part that stretches the table the most. We could add more space by removing the bullets for listing skills and synthesis items, as long as everything remains left-aligned. The purchase/resale stuff should be positioned before the synthesis info. Or, should we even have the buy/sell stuff at all? Bah, the roman alphabet system takes up way too much space... why do some of these weapons provide m.atk for characters that can't use it? >_>;;
And we should keep the sort-by-p.atk after all. At some point we can make a separate listing of all items that follow the game's (and most other JP wiki's) internal sorting system as a reference, probably numbered the same way that ToS - Bestiary page is handled, but with no other info to display.
Mayu Miyuki 13:21, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Can I remove the User space of tables for those pages where it truly doesn't matter? We can keep it on swords, axes, and the armor pages, where they're relevant, but for the other weapons there's only one character who uses them, so wouldn't it be better then to just make a note on the top that says "Repede is the only user of daggers in Tales of Vesperia" or something? I could reintegrate the attributes into the columns at that point or leave it out to help. Lanate (talk) 00:37, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Sure, that works. Go for it.
Mayu Miyuki 11:36, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
W00t, the equipment lists for Vesperia are done! Numerous other games to tackle as well.  ;_; Lanate (talk) 06:16, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Name of the arte type Edit

Hey, I have a problem, and I thought you could maybe help me with it.

You know when I make individual arte pages, and how I put the name of the arte type different if it's for an unlocalized game, right? Well, I noticed that when you fix some of those pages, you do them differently. Please don't misunderstand, I really appreciate that you want to spend time on the individual pages, I just thought that if we could come into an agreement on how the arte type should be displayed, then it would be a lot easier for both of us. So, I was wondering if you had any suggestions?

Penamesolen 22:19, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, did I mess something up? Um, the way I see it, {{nihongo|Kougeki Shoujutsu|攻撃晶術|Offensive Spell}} is the way Big Bang's listed, right? For the unlocalized, I'd do {{nihongo|Kougeki Shoujutsu|攻撃晶術||"Offensive Spell"}} to get Kougeki Shoujutsu (攻撃晶術?"Offensive Spell") if I'm paying attention to what I'm doing. For something that is localized, I'd do something like {{nihongo|[[Fonic Hymns]]|譜歌|Onsofuka}} to get Fonic Hymns (譜歌 Fuka?). And skip the nihongo template altogether if there isn't a Japanese term, like when we say Enemy Arte or something. Um, my reasoning is the way the nihongo template's set out: {{nihongo|word|japanese script|romaji|english translation}} and skipping whatever isn't necessary. What way do you suggest? I was actually trying to copy what you already did. Lanate (talk) 23:59, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
No, it wasn't that. I just remembered once in the Judgment or Angel Feathers articel where you changed it to another format/layout/way, so I began pondering if it should be another way to show the arte type. That's really why I asked.
I see. Thank you very much. I'll begin doing that from now on, and I might try to change those I've already done when I have time. Just as a question, you know how ToS uses Lv.1 Special Attack instead of Base Arte, right? Am I then supposed to use {{nihongo|Lv.1 Special Attack|特技|Tokugi|"Base Arte"}}, so that it becomes Lv.1 Special Attack (特技 Tokugi?, "Base Arte")?
Penamesolen 07:50, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Yep! The localization for that particular title should be used and the "quotes" could be used for the equivalent in later games if it got a retranslation. Lanate (talk) 18:12, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Game- and CharInfo-template Edit

Sorry to bother you again, but do you remember what you did to the CharInfo-template, where every information not added will be taken away? Can you do the same with the GameInfo-template, please?

Sure. Again, revert if you don't want.
Also, the only thing I can't figure out how to do is preserve the rounded end at the bottom of the template. Lanate (talk) 02:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Jutsu? Edit

I'm sorry for the short message again, but can you check your Japanese RadiMai and see if the magic artes there really are named "jutsu"? Since the NA version has it named "magic", I just want to know if it is "jutsu" or "majutsu" in the Japanese version.

Penamesolen 05:52, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

My JP RadiMai's at home. I'll check when I'm done with finals this weekend. Lanate (talk) 06:19, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it uses "Jutsu". Lanate (talk) 19:57, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Tales of the TempestEdit

I beat the game a week ago. You know what? *headbang* The final boss was a b*tch, always teleporting around, blowing me across the screen with a smack, and then dropping Sacred Shines, Embrace Ends, Meteor Swarms (which all had crappy graphics... Meteor Swarm looked like random red stalagmites and Embrace End I had to check to read to realize it was water-elemental spell) and all that fun stuff. It was able to poison, and I couldn't figure out how to get Arria to heal, so I ended up spamming Gumis because she didn't deign to Nurse my entirely in red party. God, I hate not being able to micromanage spells. And I hate not being able to swap those four spells in mid battle. Tempest, I realized, was not worth importing at launch date.

I hate being raped in three directions without Glory and the only arte I had to clear multiple lines was a master arte, which you couldn't use by itself.

At least Innocence's gameplay is smooth. Even if I can't understand it, it helped while away my time at jury duty. Lanate (talk) 19:57, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, Tempest is an eyesore. It could have had potential, but then again this was made by a contracted third party (Dimps), which isn't even a reliable game developer.
One tip, it might be best to control your mage character. That way, you can spam heals and nukes as much as possible, and avoid the usual "run to the enemy, whack once, run away" tactic that Rubia and Arria seem to enjoy, no matter how much TP they have or what strategy options you set them to. Two frontliners is more than enough to keep the enemies busy, if you keep them well healed.
Honestly, I would love to see a remake for Tempest. Most people say it's a shitty game that should never be mentioned again, but with the love Namco has been giving Caius and Rubia recently, it seems like they are trying to rebuild their reputation at least somewhat. Maybe in preparation for what Tempest should have been (and preferrably on a console). I mean, the three-line system this game uses could have done well if it didn't involve characters bumping into each other causing a momentary stun, and the graphics... Innocence is proof of what effort looks like, as it remains still as the best 3D graphics on the DS, actually pushing the system beyond what you expect from N64-era capabilities.
And the arte system... it's a horrible decision to limit party char AI to the four artes that you set into their shortcuts, and prevent you from changing them during battle. But in the case of the melee character that you control (and only the one you're controlling), it works better than most other games in the series. Using the set base artes to extend other bases and form longer-chained artes is a brilliant idea, since it gives you access to a LOT more than just four artes during battle. Of course, that wouldn't be a problem in a game that has shortcuts or multiple arte configs, or the ability to change shortcuts through the menu during battle, but I do hope they will revisit this version of the arte extension system someday. With much lower TP costs, dear god.
But yeah, the game as it is now, it's a complete failure. I'm glad it will never be considered for localization, as it would have killed the Tales series in the US, with zero hope of revival. I mean, this is the only game where you have to buy your skits! Eternia does the tent = skit thing too, only they're unlimited and free (and completely removed in the English versions).
Yumemi Hoshino (talk) 03:26, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
I thought that the extension system was innovative... except against bosses. When you have like zero chance of hit-stunning the enemy, there's very little chance you're even going to reach Master Artes, let alone Arcane Artes, before your opponent blows you across the screen or staggers you. And that's if you can finish the Base Arte in the first place (I'm looking at you, Sword Rain), so it's doubly frustrating. And Ditto on the TP costs. I miss being able to recover TP with a basic attack (and that's one thing that I'm disappointed was not in Innocence), 'cause it felt like it was rewarding you for playing conservatively—or giving a viable alternative.
I would definitely love to see a remake, but with more meat to it. I thought it was utterly inexcusable to have giant, sprawling, sectioned-off maps whose only purpose was to frustrate the player by leaving it between cities and dungeons. With the encounter rate as it was, the only boss that really gave me trouble was the final boss... The rest I could bum rush through while only using TP-healing Gumis, simply because walking from place to place leveled me up tremendously. And you can beat the final boss without even getting most of the artes your chars can get.
Even so, there looks to be enough party tension to make it, and any resulting skits, very interesting. The whole, "Luke, we are you family" schkit they pulled for Caius definitely threw me for a loop.
I'm playing Suikoden Tierkreis right now, and it's <3. Even though the graphics are inferior to Innocence (but damn, what 3-D games aren't?), I'm enough of a Suikoden fan that I'm loving it. Lanate (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Rich Text Edit

Yep, I switch between the rich text and the wiki text, to make sure the links work.

Is that bad? :< Tokage 01:41, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Ah, so it was always the rich text editor that causes those text autoformattings? Then it's not vandals/spammers intentionally making pointless changes? My mistake.
I should say that those edits that you and some others have been making, sometimes the code gets so compressed that it becomes hard to read things and find out where problems on a page might be found. I don't know why the rich text thing forces these things automatically, if that is indeed the case. I wonder why Wikia Central decided this would be a good idea to have in the first place, and why now, if we never had issues like this until a month ago.
If you want to keep using the rich text editor, then go ahead, we can clean up the page scripts after you. Also, you can use the preview function to ensure things will appear correctly enough. If they don't, you can look at other pages for examples. For instance, to show bolded text links, you can just type
'''[[Demon Fang]]'''
creating the link for Demon Fang, instead of using the method you had before where you masked the link, causing redundancy in the script. The ''' things go outside of the link tags.

The different colors for the lists Edit

I've been on vacation for three weeks, so I'm a little confused here... have the colors for the Title, Skill and Equipment lists changed on purpose, or is it just a misunderstanding? If it is the first, then exactly what color is for what, just so that I know?

Penamesolen 19:18, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Ooh, yeah. We left this open for input, but basically we've been changing the colors for different types of tables so that everything isn't the same color anymore. The current colors can be found here: User:Lanate/Table Testing. Our discussion can be found on Mayu's talk page. Lanate (talk) 21:00, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

ToVS arte page stuffEdit

Physical Artes Edit

I'm sorry for bringing it up again here, but you never answered the last question for the categorizings, and I don't want to continue editing artes unless I know that what I'm doing is right. -Penamesolen 11:21, September 30, 2009 (UTC)

Alice's Weapon Edit

Reverting my change. How sad.

This is a horse whip: http://dckaleidoscope.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/horse-whip.jpg

It looks exactly like Alice's weapon apart from it's ornate hilt. It even makes the same swooshy sounds and has the leather on the end. Whoever came up with Toy Rapier is kidding themselves. Especially considering how she treats people, and calls them her pets. It being a horse whip is so obvious.

-User:Seifu

Compromise? Toy Rapier with whip implications? I know the image it's supposed to invoke, but I can't really find sources either way and my eyes are starting to hurt from staring at the Alice concept art's notes. Lanate (talk) 05:06, December 15, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for fixingEdit

I just wanted to thank you for fixing the No Items Ever page. Much appreciated. : ) Nathbud789

Destiny and Eternia(aka Destiny 2)Edit

Just a question but I have every tales game in america exept destiny and eternia. Would you recommend these games to play, because I'm thinking of getting them on ebay. Nathbud789

Re: GuardianEdit

Referring to what you said on the guardian article's history. Watch this video [1] and you'll see Senel use the skill against one Schwartz's spells. I don't believe it's an eres though it might a be a button command like guarding. I would check on my Legendia myself but it's all scratched up and doesn't load the game at all. --'Misao'Smile :) 06:31, March 17, 2010 (UTC)

Right. I know that it's a button defense skill, but only the English version shouts "Guardian" as far as I'm aware. I'm trying to avoid saying it's "Suigojin" if it really isn't, though I'm not sure what the Japanese version says. And, to be honest, I'm a bit hesitant to open my JP copy of Legendia to check its manual. Lanate (talk) 06:54, March 17, 2010 (UTC)

Symphonia artes Edit

Thanks for the Presea fix. I totally forgot that in order to use one of those altered artes you need to be dealing elemental damage, so the "normal" hit will also have that element too, hahaha.

I was wondering, for the Symphonia characters' arte pages, do you think it's worthwhile to add how a new skill is activated? Some of them are obvious, like using a level 1 tech to activate a level 2 tech after x uses, but for instance Regal's Triple Rage Kick is activated by a midair basic attack, which isn't as obvious, I think. Lig0schndr 08:50, October 10, 2011 (UTC)

It's obvious enough. All of Regal's midair attacks are sectioned off as, simply enough, "midair special attacks". It goes without saying that everything under that header should be used in midair, though even if they are used on the ground, Regal will always automatically jump to set himself up for the aerial attack.
Unless I'm misunderstanding you and you're actually talking about how the artes are actually acquired once the conditions to learn them have been cleared and the arte names appear in blue in the menu? That is largely extraneous information, even in this instance, as the artes never always activate for the first time even if you perform the required action. We have hardly enough space on these tables as it is, and if we add something for one arte, consistency rules that it must be done to all artes on all pages for all games with this system, Eternia and Symphonia.
Byakuren Hijiri (talk) 09:04, October 10, 2011 (UTC)
Ah yeah, I meant the latter. I kind of figured it wasn't too necessary, but I wanted to ask. Thanks for the response. Lig0schndr 09:08, October 10, 2011 (UTC)

Statues Edit

I do have some Philosophers Stones from my last game, the problem is I only have two Quality Stones. I have to think about which statues I want. I'll see it for myself.

Did you seriously create that Abyss Accessory page in 1 day? Edit

Wow... It took me three days to add all those armor pages to the site, and those pages were without Japanese names. The accessory page you made seems really complete, with Japanese names and tons of other stuff.

Impressive, you must be a wiki pro.

Editing your Enemy Artes list?Edit

I was reviewing your Enemy Artes list today when I spotted several errors in both Japanese names and English translations. I would like to edit the list and correct them.

Although, since the list is technically yours to decide for, I figured I should at least ask for permission before editing the page.

LGT (talk) 11:22, April 7, 2012 (PST)

Um, sure. I'd prefer sources for anything changed though, unless it's to say that someone doesn't use xxx arte, at which point I'll try to find its source. Lanate (talk) 07:44, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Here's a small collage of the "sources" for my edits:
34753530.png
Unfortunately, after searching for about a half of an hour, I've given up hope on finding a video where Maiden's Prayer or Shining Blastia Massacre is used, so I apologize for not finding proof regarding their English names.
LGT (talk) 02:11, April 8, 2012 (PST)
Thanks for catching those. Unfortunately, if I can't provide a source for myself, I try to leave it as ??? so that, at the very least, misinformation isn't spread. Lanate (talk) 15:03, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Alright then. I could care less about Maiden's Prayer, but I thought Shining Blastia Massacre was worthy of being searched for at least one more time, and I finally found it.

New Method Edit

I noticed you have begun implementing a new method of listing "Appearances" and "Arte Family Outline" on arte pages. While I find it appealing, do you intend to begin altering arte pages that are not listed this way? Consistency is important. It would look flawed if certain arte pages have this look, while others do not. I am perfectly willing to assist you in doing so, but understanding your reasoning and intentions would greatly help. Moviebaby 19:51, June 8, 2012 (UTC)

I put the concept on hold a long while back to rethink a couple of things... and promptly forgot about it once other things came up. The only working example of this format is on the Demon Fang page, and the main intent is to decrease page size for arte pages that are as lengthy as that one anyway. But anyway, my main concern is the "related" bit in the arte family outline, since people may decide unrelated things are related without justification. Anyway, more info about the format shift can be found on the talk page for Demon Fang itself, so you may want to read that conversation just to be informed. If the format shift is going to happen, it does need to happen on all of the pages within a reasonable timeframe, and I am not against making the shift already if that's what people want.

Animation ArtesEdit

You know, I was thinking a couple of months back about how we might be able to incorporate artes being used in the various anime/manga/omake into our individual arte pages. I was actually thinking precisely about Eternia's anime at that time (still trying to rewrite Reid and Meredy's char pages btw), and I posted something on the TSF kinda recently which led me to mention Trinicus's Indignation in the Phantasia OVA. But I dreaded the idea of going through all of these works and taking records of each instance and user per episode. Still, these arte appearances definitely deserve some sort of mention, and I'm surprised that you came to a similar conclusion.

Also MUGEN ZEKKYOUJIN. If only the Father-Son Unison Attack is also a thing, but my mind was muddled by the Tales of Nights parody vids on moontube.

Heh, this was always at the tip of my mind as well. My enemy artes list (more like boss artes) is more or less caught up with all of the localized games, with only a couple of ??? that I can't find from online videos, so I decided to archive the anime stuff just because it caught my fancy as well. I was going to tackle the Phantasia OVA next, as I actually have the dub DVD. Lanate (talk) 11:15, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
