Double Spiral Attack (ToE)

Double Spiral Attack as it appears in Tales of Eternia.

Soaring Light Spear (閃空翔裂破 Senkuu Shoureppa?, "Flashing Sky Soaring Fissuring Tear"), alternatively Victory Light Spear (閃空衝裂破 / 閃空衝烈破 Senkuu Shoureppa?, "Flashing Sky Colliding Fissuring Tear"/"Flashing Sky Colliding Violent Tear"), is an upgraded version of the Light Spear arte.

Arte Description and History[]

This arte is executed initially the same way as a typical Light Spear, in which the character spirals into the air surrounded by a trail of light, but instead finishing with a powerful horizontal slash while airborne, before falling back to the ground. This is a very powerful attack, but it is difficult to combo with since the final slash will miss the target if it is not launched into the air with the character during the initial spiral jump.

Although they share the same pronunciation, both variations of this attack are defined by different kanji characters that are used in their Japanese names, 閃空衝裂破 and 閃空翔裂破, in which the third character is either "Collide" ( shou?) and "Soar" ( shou?). Due to this difference in naming, characters with the "collide" version have Victory Light Spear, while characters with "soar" have Soaring Light Spear. Both variations appeared within the same localized game once, in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, and their English names have followed the established differences.

In Tales of the Abyss, Soaring Light Spear is an arcane arte Guy Cecil can learn from the sidequest that involves learning from other people on the Sigmund-style swordsmanship. After rescuing Natalia at the Oracle Headquarters in Daath, Guy finds four different members of the Artes Council in the following locations. Near the monument at the right side in front of the cathedral, near the bar counter on the second floor of the inn at Grand Chokmah, near the generator at the center of Belkend, and inside the left igloo at Keterburg. Guy has these men fill out his Hod Citizen Registry, allowing the fourth member to teach Guy the arte. In the same game, for some reason, Reid's version of the arte, despite reprising the original Japanese voice clip from Tales of Eternia, uses the "collide" variant despite him using the "soar" variant in Tales of Eternia and is named Spiral Attack, the localized name for Light Spear in the same game.

In Tales of Vesperia, the user instead dives in a diagonal angle instead of performing the horizontal slash, making it visually similar to Light Spear's pattern of movement in other games. Similar to what happened with Light Spear, Victory Light Spear's kanji for "Fissure" (?) is replaced with "Violent" (?), without the change in pronunciation.

In Tales of the Rays, the "soar" variant becomes Reid Hershel's Light-elemental mirrage arte. Instead of executing the arte immediately, he first charges the sword while soaring in the air with his target and finishes with slamming his target to the ground, also damaging nearby enemies. The "collide" variant is used by both Zelos Wilder and Repede and the latter's version can be used in the air at level one enhancement. Additionally, Zelos's version alters into Majin Senkuuha when used as the sixth or later action in a chain and Repede's version alters into Senkuu Hishouken when used as the sixth or later action in a chain or during Burst Limits.
