Arte Description and History
In its original appearance, Violent Pain is an arte exclusive to Barbatos Goetia. It provides a charge effect, through which he instantly calls down a burst of dark lightning upon himself, leaving him immobilized for four seconds as lightning continues to strike from above. After the lightning dissipates, he gains an increase to his physical attack while sacrificing his defense. It has the additional property of nullifying the effect of the "All-Divide" item, allowing him to deal full damage to party members while they continue to attack with half of their effectiveness.
During the arte's lengthy animation, Barbatos is fully invincible, similarly to the use of the Flash charge effect used by party members. Furthermore, if the party does use an "All-Divide", Barbatos will not counter immediately with his standard Blast Caliber item counter, instead activating Violent Pain as a counter specific to this item before chaining into his Evil Charge, and finally, No Items Ever!, thereby doing full damage to his target.
In Tales of Vesperia, the arte is rendered as a magical attack that requires spellcasting delay, rather than providing an instant effect. Once cast, a violet-colored glyph appears below the enemy, and then several tendrils of energy rise into the air before curving down toward the target, striking down as several arches that pierce into the enemy from above. This is one of the few attacks in the game that can deal full damage to enemies while they are knocked down.
